ANG48

ANGSUMALIN 48 is the full name of ANG48, which stands for the fictional organization Alliance of Nippon Girls 48. The film is a synthesis of archival materials from Asian film history, from different countries. The result is an intelligent operating system of 48 digits, born into a half-human, half-golden-snail figure. ANGSUMALIN 48 can dissolve and become invisible to human eyes in order to penetrate through the air as a secret cultural agent. ANGSUMALIN 48 women have the role of building connections, spreading good relations, and providing support for the alliance of Asian women in different countries to rise up and release their past pain—from WWII to the Cold War to today. The name of this operating system is chosen to commemorate and give honor to Angsumalin, a fictional character from the Thai novel Khu Kam (1969) by Thommayanti, and an emblem of honesty, loyalty, and love for the homeland.

The Wandering Ghosts

In the last couple of years, thousands of illegal Thai migrant workers in South Korea are deported back to Thailand, while thousands more slipped through the borders to take up both legal and illegal jobs. Calling themselves ‘ghosts’, they left their homeland for a foreign country whose language they cannot speak, work towards an uncertain future, and hide like phantoms to evade the authorities. The film observes the situation of these workers, as well as visits the other generation of Thai migrant worker in South Korea, an 80 year-old Thai veteran who once fought a Korean war.

Big Ears Listen with Feet

Artist-filmmakers Bêka & Lemoine take us to Bangkok on a one day hectic journey through the chaotic concrete jungle of the South-Asian megacity. Led by the moving personal story of Boonserm Premthada, one of today's most important Thai architects, the film unfolds through a free wander, punctuated by stunning encounters, events and places, which have contributed to shape Premthada's unique identity and sensibility. Deaf from birth, the architect evokes how his disability led him to develop an alternative way of listening using his whole body as a resonance chamber of sound vibrations. Despite their large ears, elephants also perceive sound mostly through their feet. Learning from elephants, Boonserm has developed an architecture of the senses where sound vibrations become the voice of space.
