data-verse 2

data-verse is a data-driven audio-visual trilogy by artist and composer Ryoji Ikeda which marks a two-decade culmination in the artist’s research. The trilogy addresses the layered dimensions of our world, from the microscopic, to the human, to the macroscopic. Through Ikeda’s process, massive scientific data sets have been transcribed, converted, transformed, de/re/meta-constructed and orchestrated to visualise and sonify the different dimensions that co-exist in our world between the visible and the invisible. Each variation immerses visitors in the vast data universe in which we live, capturing hidden facets of nature and the vast scientific knowledge underpinning our existence. This large-scale data-driven trilogy is generated by extremely precise computer programming and features a minimalist electronic soundtrack, harmonised with Hollywood-standard, high-definition, 4K DCI video projections of scientific data onto a large screen.

Tokyo Girl

A maximum-speed, sonic-visual collage that pierces the spirit of the contemporary zeitgeist through the perspective of a young woman navigating it. Featuring Mako Hiragi’s monologue and on-screen text, the film was produced in January of 2019, and very much situated in this window at the end of the Heisei era and before the commencement of then-nameless Reiwa. Endlessly creative, possibly nauseating, highly addicting, and super-relatable, Tokyo Girl is an intimate stimulus overload.

South of the Mountains

The sandstorm has covered the land and sky as far as the eye could see. As it wasn't viable to leave the task until the next day, the salt finder and the rock finding team continue their work in the Gobi Desert, dispatching smaller units to gather at the temporary transfer station. When it came close to supper time, the sandstorm has engulfed the entire base. The sky appeared a magenta color and grey green. Spinning at the tallest point of the mountain was a giant white cloud. Going from the cloud downwards, at the south side of the mountain, was an endless Gobi Desert, where a 750 hectares (1800 acres) ecological base was slowly being constructed. Video practice, sampling the topography, where does the depth of field lead in the image and sound? In the immortal desert, nothing decays. Everything weathers and turns to dust.

Cursed Video Series 9: Sakura D Special

The director, a former policewoman skilled in fighting, a professional photographer who continues to shoot even after his death, and a young man full of modern sensibilities who supports them, create a reality stranger than fiction! People being manipulated by someone or something over their heads, or the anger of a girl who never grew up... This work is a reconstruction from "Cursed Video Series: Sakura D" and "Cursed Video Series: Sakura D - The Fear of Ito Dashi".

Xiao Zhen Wei Guang

A documentary about small-town youth in Kunshan. They are lonely, worn down, helpless, deceived, marked by searing imprints. They keep trying, striving, struggling, and refusing to give in, their faint light rising like a pillar. Through multiple dimensions and layers, the film deconstructs this group of small-town young people who have come to the city for work: why they came, their work experiences, emotional lives, future plans, and hopes. Note: This film strictly records and objectively presents the lives of these young people. Due to the particularity of the subjects and technical limitations, the image quality and overall texture of the film are relatively rough.
