A young woman living in Manhattan pretends to be the mother of an infant in order to get a seat on the subway.

An ageing fishing boat, Dai-go Fukuryu Maru ("Lucky Dragon No. 5") sets out from the port of Yaizu in Shizuoka Prefecture. It travels around the Pacific line fishing. While the ship is near Bikini Atoll, the ship's navigator sees a flash. All the crew come up to watch. They realize it is an atomic explosion, but take time to clear their fishing gear. A short time later, grey ash starts to fall on the ship. When the ship returns to port the sailors have been burned brown. They unload the fish, which are then transported away. They visit the local doctor and then go to Tokyo for an examination. It turns out they are all highly radioactive. Their symptoms become worse, and the contaminated fish causes a panic.

Christopher Crumpet has an imaginary elephant for a playmate. Christopher's father begins to see the elephant. Mr. Crumpet reveals this to his co-worker, Mr. Bilgewater, who quickly plays office politics by telling their boss that Mr. Crumpet is crazy. The boss has recently awarded Crumpet a junior partnership, which Bilgewater thought he had deserved. The boss visits the Crumpet home, and finds that Crumper does indeed see his son's imaginary playmate. But instead of taking the junior partnership away from Crumpet, he makes him a full partner. 1943: A schoolmaster called Stefan Novak and his watchmaker friend Tadek are working for the Polish resistance lead by Stanislav Muski and allow themselves to be captured by the Nazis and taken to a labour camp on the Baltic coast so that they can spy on the operations there. Stefan and Tadek discover that the camp houses a huge production unit where the V1 rocket is being built, which Hitler intends to use to destroy London. The pair succeed in informing the resistance of what is happening who in turn tip off the allies who launch a full scale raid on the plant and destroy it therefore setting back the Nazis' plan by months. However, the fight is far from over as Hitler's generals proceed with plans to build yet another plant and Stefan and Tadek are faced with a dangerous challenge, they must capture a complete V1 rocket and help in smuggling it back to Britain so that the allies can prepare themselves for Hitler's proposed invasion...
