The Chinese police visit head-teacher Chen at home. Her daughter, a dissident filmmaker living in Hong Kong, plans yet another critical film about China's colonization of the small autonomous territory. Set in the late Qing Dynasty, the film tells the story of a violent invasion led by the foreign warlord Wazuozhuo, who seeks to destabilize and divide Xinjiang. The film follows the true life story of one of China's greatest composers, Xian Xinghai. The start of the Soviet Union's Great Patriotic War against Nazi Germany in 1941 made it difficult for Xian to return to China. He was stranded in Almaty, suffering poverty and sickness. Kazakh composer Bakhitzhan Baykadamov then helped Xian, providing him with a home, despite not knowing his true identity since Xian was then using an alias. There Xian put down roots and composed some of his most famous works.

The film focuses on the suffering of Chinese who were imprisoned in a forced labor camp called Jiabiangou in the Gobi Desert in winter 1960 under Mao Zedong on the grounds that they were "rightist elements". The film tells of the harsh life of these men, who coped with physical exhaustion, extreme cold, starvation and death on a daily basis.

'Smog Journeys' traces two families from two different backgrounds; one a mining family in Hebei province, and the other a trendy middle class family in Beijing. Both face a similar fate. Air pollution is one of China's most pressing environmental and health issues. Greenpeace calls for a shift from coal to clean renewable energy, as well as short term measures that better safeguard people's health.
