Caspiar

In 1998, the island of Caspiar sinks, forcing all its inhabitants to flee and become refugees in places such as Hong Kong. Su’s fictional story about one such refugee unfolds through a seemingly stoic interview. The interviewee – a French-speaking white man – works as a domestic worker, a role that subverts colonial expectations of the white expatriate living in Hong Kong. The video concludes with a quotation from the famous “madeleine” passage in Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time, foregrounding the centrality of memory and recollection in the reimagination of places, identities and histories.

If Frames Disappeared from the World

Frames have already disappeared from the world, but what about moving image expression? I tried making it recognized that physical frames no longer exist in modern moving image production, paradoxically by constructing a virtual film strip in a digital space. I shot frames of 8mm films one by one with a digital single-lens reflex camera with a macro-cine copy. After digitizing the frames I arranged them lengthways one by one. Now it was possible to see the virtual long strip consisted of more than 100 frames through a virtual camera from any distance. I started from the farthest distance where the each frame can be recognized and gradually dived into the film strip. By doing so the work features that it is the most essential element of film that intermittent movement generate dynamism. I’d like to suggest that disappearance of physical frames is not a niche problem that matters only when producing experimental films but a problem that all kinds of moving image expression have in common

Butterfly Tears

Shan Yue, a young Yue Opera dan actress, navigates the dissonance between stage romance and her impending marriage to Chen He, whose heart belongs to another man, Qiao Mo. While audiences weep for the butterfly lovers’ eternal bond, Shan knows too well the chasm separating theatrical passion from life’s stark prose. As Chen vanishes and her mother-in-law Lu Xiuzhen’s tragic history surfaces, Shan confronts her crossroad: perpetuate the ornate lie of tradition or dismantle the gilded cage. Beneath the phoenix crown and painted brows, a quiet revolution brews—not with arias, but the tremulous courage to rewrite her script beyond society’s stage.
