Puccini: Edgar (Teatro Regio di Torino)

Puccini’s operas are among the most beloved and best-known works in the classical repertoire, but Edgar may be unknown even to aficionados, at least as it is presented here. This original four-act version of Edgar, first performed in 1889, was believed lost for over a century when Puccini’s granddaughter Simonetta discovered the score fully intact in 2008. In addition to the third act’s funeral music, which Arturo Toscanini conducted at Puccini’s funeral in 1924, listeners may recognize the duet from the now-restored fourth act, cut by Puccini in subsequent revisions of the work: it bears more than a passing similarity to the third-act duet in Tosca.

Sante

Bianca is 12 years old when she is chosen to play the angel — a symbol of purity and grace — at her town fair. As she prepares for the moment when she will be lifted off the ground, her encounter with Ginevra fractures the surface of childhood and opens a crack from which a new and unsettling desire seeps in. In a suspended time and place, the film covers the imperceptible yet radical transition between imposed purity and awareness of one’s own body, between childhood and adulthood. A female coming-of-age tale that investigates — through its hagiographic and apocryphal aesthetic — the symbolic construct of grace and the inherited weight of guilt.

Abissinia

Antonio (Enrico Salimbeni) may not have been the most energetic waiter in the most popular restaurant in this unfashionable Adriatic tourist town, but that is no reason for his boss not to pay him. When he takes the wages that he is owed out of the till, not only does the owner throw him out, but he has him beaten up, to boot. Enzo (Mario Adorf), the owner of a restaurant so far off the beaten track it is widely known as Abissinia rather than being called by its true name, takes him in. The leisurely pace of everything that is done at the restaurant leaves Antonio with plenty of time to put together the story of its owner and the love of his life, and how he, too, fell from culinary glory to his present obscurity.
