Inuit artist Asinnajaq plunges us into a sublime imaginary universe—14 minutes of luminescent, archive-inspired cinema that recast the present, past and future of her people in a radiant new light. Diving into the NFB’s vast archive, she parses the complicated cinematic representation of the Inuit, harvesting fleeting truths and fortuitous accidents from a range of sources—newsreels, propaganda, ethnographic docs, and work by Indigenous filmmakers. Embedding historic footage into original animation, she conjures up a vision of hope and beautiful possibility.

Reawakening of memories

I wanted to render an interesting depiction of how the extraction of a dead person's memory-a very sci-fi-esque musing-is used to solve the mystery of a woman's death, and is so doing, cautiously broach the injustice and indifference toward women's issues in our society. In leveraging the highly interactive nature of 360 VR, my goal was to get the audience a little closer to the psychology of the dead woman. Furthermore, I tried to explore new possibilities in VR movies by using multiple cameras and organizing scenes and cuts in such a way as to move beyond the existing VR films' monotonous one-scene, one-take progression.

aloft

Aloft is an interactive VR work created through a collaboration between Huang Hsin-Chien and US artist Laurie Anderson from 2016 to 2017. Audiences will be placed in a VR scene that is 16,000 meters mid-air and embark on a fantastical journey amid a gradually disintegrating plane fuselage, which symbolizes industrial civilization. The audience’s perspective is suspended mid-air, with debris representing memories and symbols floating past. The narrative is activated when audiences attempt to touch the debris with their hands. The black box flight recorder, letter paper scribbled with blurry handwriting, and a rusty old phone sending ambiguous signals, all represent human history and memory and are rearranged according to the touch of curious audiences.

Inherent Good

America’s wealth was built on the backs and shoulders of those who came before us and all who have yet to come after us. But today, very few Americans are benefiting from the collective wealth of our great nation. Rising wealth inequality continues to reward the rich and powerful – leaving the rest of us behind to fight over crumbs. It’s time to reimagine a new social contract. INHERENT GOOD is a 60-minute documentary starring southern comedian Trae Crowder who takes viewers on a journey to explore a transformative idea of giving free cash to every citizen – no strings attached. This big idea called Universal Basic Income is examined through personal stories of perseverance by everyday Americans living in the heartland. It’s not a matter if we deserve it, but rather do we trust each other to make basic income a reality for everyone?

Science Moms

This is a film that will give a voice to the science-minded moms - the women who are too often drowned out by the fear mongers, the shamers, and the CelebMoms. Through interviews with "science moms" who are on the front lines of this struggle, we’ll dissect the bogus claims of these celebrities one by one and explain in simple language what the science really shows about GMOs, vaccines, homeopathy, and any of these topics that are often in the headlines, yet even more often are misunderstood. We can’t change everyone’s minds, but we can make our voices heard. One mom at a time.
