Alles auf Rot

Three years after his conviction for drug trafficking, Erich Kessel is about to be released from prison. It's a particularly trying time for this addiction-free former narcotics officer, whose seriously ill daughter has just died. With his wife, Claire, ready to give him a second chance after years of separation, and his former colleague and friend, Superintendent Mario Diller, having found him a job as a bartender, Kessel is determined to prove himself beyond reproach. But shortly before his release, the double murder of a young drug dealer and his fiancée, daughter of the powerful Syrian crime boss Walid Schukri, threatens to ruin his fine promises. The latter, who is serving a long sentence alongside Kessel, offers him a handsome sum to catch his daughter's killer. For the former commissioner, now broke, the temptation is great to accept this juicy contract, the ultimate investigation on the frontier of legality.

The Madman and The Cathedral

In 1963, Don Justo Gallego Martinez laid the foundation stone of a cathedral. A peasant, with no architectural training, no construction experience and no tools, he turned his back on the fields and started building. He had no blueprints and no planning permission. He had not even seen many cathedrals. All he had was the unshakeable conviction that God wanted him to build a cathedral. 50 years later, he is still building. Filmed over 5 years, this short documentary was funded by Britdoc. It was shown on TV channels and at film festivals around the world and showcased by Channel 4 as one of "16 documentaries to watch before you make one."

Teach Me

Children at UK schools with individual special educational needs (SEN) make up 14.9% of the student population (a figure that is predicted to rise). So it raises questions to why the education system isn’t adapting to meet these needs? And, how does it feel to be one of these kids stuck in an institution which isn’t accommodating you? Teach Me as a documentary sets out to understand these experiences in the present moment from children who are at the age when school makes up a large portion of their daily experiences. The documentary interviews four children all ages 12 and 13 and each of them with individual and overlapping SEN. Using childlike paper cut-outs and school supplies to form a stylish stop motion that transports you into the world/mind of Dan, Lydia, Martha and Annie.

Why Plastic: Coca Cola/American Plastic

Whales beached after ingesting plastic, oceans soiled: a quarter of marine waste today comes from cans and plastic bottles. The drinks industry produces 470 billion single-use bottles each year, 25% of which come from Coca-Cola. Although the world's largest soft drink producer has set ambitious targets to prevent this environmental pollution, it has often failed to do so. In the 1950s, the company sold its drink exclusively in returnable glass bottles, which it washed and refilled. Two decades later, these were replaced by disposable bottles - a decision whose devastating effects still linger.

Frammenti di una Festa Furiosa

Furio’s Furious Fragments & Friends - Furio Jesi (1941 Turin -1980 Genoa), enfant prodige moving between a plethora of disciplines – egyptology, history of religions, German philology, literary criticism - passed away prematurely, not without leaving bright fragments which throw light on mechanisms beneath many socio-cultural practices, for instance regarding cultural belonging, the functions of myth in modern society. He saw kind of “mythological machines” at work underneath our cultural production of meanings, historically determined, departing from a void, something that is still in culture but as residue, a missing link to an alleged authentic experience nowadays compromised up to the point to became just rhetoric, a byword, which is in no way neutral, but a tool, a macchina, for maintaining the status quo and serving the power apparatus. As in the case of holidays, celebrations and festivals.

Good Bye, Sowjetunion!

In the beginning, there was the dream of a better and fairer society. For millions of people; however, the Soviet dream became a nightmare. After all these years since its collapse, what still remains of the Soviet Union? How can one approach the complex history of the mighty Soviet empire today? Henrike Sandner (*1971 in Dresden) answers these questions in a very personal film. Her film episodically follows the history of the Soviet Union and the Soviet myths of greatness, heroes, new people and a new Soviet culture, based on her own story. The film lasts 52 minutes and spans the years 1917 to 1991 - a story of contrasts that juxtaposes different perspectives and realities. Private archive footage and photos contrast with "official" news, Soviet film material or DEFA film classics. A "short" and personal history of the Soviet Union.
