Memory Room 451

The subject matter of Memory Room 451 is the cultural and historical significance of 20th-century hairstyles – the Afro, the conk, dreadlocks – in Black communities on both sides of the Atlantic. Akomfrah has disguised this exploration as a science fiction story – in the manner of the groundbreaking writers profiled in The Last Angel of History – while providing a bravura display of the aesthetics of video art in the 1990s. The tale of visitors from the future who gather dreams from unwitting subjects in order to construct a history of the Black diaspora both defamiliarizes Akomfrah’s ongoing project and points to the danger that extracting history from memory can be a kind of expropriation.

Mystery of the Cocaine Mummies

The UK series Equinox brings us this investigation of a mystery that is baffling Egyptologists. The case calls into question whole areas of accepted scientific fact from botany, through chemistry to archaeology. In 1992, routine tests on a mummy in a Munich museum revealed high body levels of cocaine and nicotine. But such substances were not available in ancient Egypt, coming as they do from the Americas – not, apparently, to be “discovered” for thousands of years after the passing of the Egyptian dynasties. Are the mummies fakes; were the substances from plants that have since disappeared or were there, in fact, trade routes between Egypt and South America that predate accepted chronology?

Eyes

Part of the COI's infamous "Drinking And Driving Wrecks Lives" campaign which ran between 1987 and 1997. We see a single, uninterrupted shot but this time it's of a young woman laying on the asphalt after being hit by a drunk driver. As the camera pans slowly away from her eyes (one of which is dilated, an indicator of severe brain trauma) we see paramedics trying to resuscitate her as she lays lifeless in a pool of her own blood. Played over the footage is the audio of the drunk driver who caused the accident being quizzed by a police officer, desperately pleading for her to "be alright" – though it appears that the paramedics' attempts to resuscitate her continue to be futile.

Girl

Carol Morley's debut short uses the iconography of the genre of melodrama – the staircase, the father – to explore the story of a girl's relationship with her father, and the impossibility of recreating a time, a place, and a memory. Cross-cutting between the girl protagonist and her father, the film creates a sense of crisis and conflict. As the girl invests her feelings in her surroundings and describes events connected to her father, we are drawn into a world of pain and pathos. Morley's first directorial credit was her graduation film from Central St. Martin's School of Art.

The Importance of Being Ernie

Ernie Wise was always part of a double-act. As one half of Morecambe and Wise, Britain's most successful comedy team, he enjoyed the lifestyle of the rich and famous. It was a partnership that lasted 46 years - until Eric died in 1984. Then his "little fat friend" had to go on alone. Being number two in their act was never easy for Ernie, and a new solo act has proved even more difficult. Last Christmas, for the first time in 20 years, he appeared in pantomime. This film examines what drives him to want to make a comeback when he could be enjoying his retirement. He is seen preparing for panto, remembering the great times, reliving the jokes; Ernie reveals all, including the hairpiece and the join.

Highlights of the dramatic trial included the judges summing up and the sentencing which brought cheers and spontaneous applause from a packed courtroom in Rostov.
