A long time ago, the little bugs ate up all the wild fruits on the ground. The little bee was very anxious, but the little earthworm didn't care. Then, a heavy rain washed the little earthworms out of the cave.

Written by the great librettist Tong Tik-sang, and featuring Lee Tit's elegant direction and superb performances from Yam Kim-fai and Pak Suet-sin, "Butterfly and Red Pear Blossom" brings Cantonese opera to cinematic life. The film features two lovers who have never met in person but whose poetry over three years has subtly declared their unyielding love. Yam's minimalist acting style enables her to convey dynamic passion as well as step about the stage with ease and accomplish the image of a resolute, yet gentle, scholar. Pak meanwhile defies a prime minister with pride and dignity.

The film is a promotional film, recording the construction of a pressurized lockbox at the Hachinohe power plant in Aomori. Matsumoto's official first directorial debut at the Shinriken Motion Picture, the film found a 16mm film print stored in a civil library and digitized. His official credit is the assistant director in Silver Ring, commonly known as Matsumoto's first work. Matsumoto challenged to objectively capture the image of the worker in camera in spite of the limitations of promotional films where the records of the construction site were prioritized.

Blood Battle in Furong Valley

Experimental short animation film by Japanese manga artist Ryuichi Yokoyama, based on a Japanese folk tale.

1957 documentary covering the highly publicized wrestling match between Japanese-Korean Rikidozan versus Lou Thesz.

In the early days of liberation, Battalion Commander Shen (played by Ge Zhenbang) felt that after liberation, there was no battle to fight, so he should take off his military uniform and go to work locally. The division commander (played by Liu Jia) told him that at the beginning of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the reactionaries were not willing to accept their defeat and had to underestimate the enemy. After listening carefully, he felt deeply and knew the importance of the gun and the great responsibility of their own.

This propaganda film was supported by US Information Service (USIS) and presents Bangkok as a peaceful and developing city at the centre of the “free world,” a narrative pushed forth to counter the threat of the Cold War. Political motivations aside, the film shows Bangkok as a capital on the cusp of modernity that still preserves its traditional values, and there are scenes that evokes nostalgia such as the ballroom dancing at Lumpini Park Auditorium, Chalermthai Theatre on Ratchadamneon Avenue, Dusit Zoo, Don Mueng Airport, the studio at Thailand’s first TV channel, night scenes of downtown Bangkok, and many more.

1955 short film

The origin story of legendary kung fu masters.

Filmed only a few months after Tatsumi Hijikata’s first explosive public butoh performance, “Gisei” features Hijikata and members of his Asbestos Hall Troupe in a brutal allegory of a closed society. Shot by noted Japanese film scholar Donald Richie, “Gisei” still conveys the shock that Japanese audiences in 1959 must have felt at the birth of Hijikata's ankoku butoh, or "dance of darkness". Richie met Hijikata through mutual friend Yukio Mishima. They decided to collaborate on a film about segregation. Richie memorialized the film in his diary: “It is more than ever about the death of an individual, a distinct kind of human sacrifice.”

The short film is the earliest surviving Japanese anime broadcast on television. Originally airing on July 14, 1958, on NTV and again on October 15, 1958, the nine-minute animation was the first televised Japanese animation and the first example of a full color broadcast.

There are currently only about 42 minutes of fragments of this film left.

Yingtai, disguised as a man, studied with Liang Shanbo. Forced to marry another, Liang died heartbroken. At Liang's grave, Yingtai leaped in, and both turned into butterflies.

So Sam-long becomes a monk to disguise his revolutionary activities. On learning that his natural mother is still alive and living in Japan, he goes searching for her. There he meets his cousin Shizuko and falls in love with her. However, cognizant of the fact that he is a monk, So returns to China, leaving a letter for his lover.

As the wealthy Ha Mung Shan nears death, he asks his son, Chung Ping, to marry his fiancée, Ng Yuk Keng. However, Yuk Keng loves Chung Ping’s brother, Bo Ming. To avoid upsetting his father, Chung Ping pretends that a singer, Su Qiu, is Yuk Keng and brings her home. Meanwhile, Yuk Keng’s aunt, Xing Hong, covets her father’s inheritance and attempts to kill Su Qiu, framing Chung Ping. Su Qiu survives, cared for by the Fu family. Later, Xing Hong kills Yuk Keng to live with Bo Ming, but he refuses. Taking the inheritance, Xing Hong stays with the Fu family and regrets her actions. Ha Mung Shan then arranges a new marriage for Chung Ping. Su Qiu, seeking revenge, disguises herself as a ghost on the wedding night, exposing the truth. Bo Ming confronts Chung Ping, and Xing Hong confesses her guilt. Mung Shan realizes Bo Ming is his son, and Chung Ping reunites with Su Qiu, leading to a happy ending.

One day, a frog saw a group of wild geese flying by, and suddenly thought of it, so he begged the wild geese to take him to the sky.
