Und freitags in die "Grüne Hölle"

Ernst Cantzler’s documentary about the soccer fan club “Union”, the scenes in the stadium, in their club bar “Green Hell” and in the streets of Berlin was a sensation. The scenes shown by the director and his cameraman had never been seen before: young soccer fans full of violence in the “first German peaceful state”. They are Hooligans who live from one weekend to the other just to get it all out. They want to scream, kick, hit and drink.

Gendernauts: A Journey Through Shifting Identities

Monika Treut explores the worlds and thoughts of several female to male transgendered individuals. As with Treuts first film, Jungfrauenmaschine, Gendernauts, enters a minority sector of San Fransisco culture. The characters in this film have a lot to complain about, and they do. They are people whose physical appearance (female) does not match their inner sexual identity (male). The subject is pinpointed in the film independant of sexual orientation. Leave your conservative hats at the door, this is going to need your special attention.

Aus der Praxis, für die Praxis

On the roof of a high-rise building in St. Petersburg stands a bearded man with a briefcase, telling a story. He feels comfortable up there, because from here he has a clear view of his neighborhood, Kuptschino, a dreary concrete housing estate. He can observe crimes. And he can intervene. As proof, he pulls out an imaginary pistol and fires it wildly. The man is a member of a club dedicated to fighting crime. After all, every child knows that crime is part of everyday life in Russia.

Bulky Trash

In early summer 1989, Helke Misselwitz portrays young musicians in a band who produce their music on other people’s waste items. The four boys call themselves "Bulk Rubbish" and they drum out their resentment, having grown up on the new housing estates of East Berlin. A straight-up picture of the GDR youth is presented here, which in no way conforms to the official image. The film crew concentrates on the observation of the boy Enrico and his mother Erika: when the mother marries in the West, her son decides to stay in East Berlin, bidding her farewell at the border-crossing. Only shortly after, the tables are turned again: as the events in Berlin leading up to the fall of the Wall are practically captured live from the film crew, Enrico insists on maintaining his cultural identity, even after the fall of the Wall. The "Bulk Rubbish" musicians want to remain citizens of their own state and perceive the looming reunification with scepticism.

An unspecified incident in his homeland prevents him from returning. By marrying a young weaver, he eventually becomes related to all the people he met during his research and becomes an employee of the local carpet museum.
