George Gershwin: Bidin' My Time

This program is set among excerpts of letters and archival interviews with George Gershwin and his brother and lyricist Ira Gershwin, his longtime musical collaborator Kay Swift, and the legendary pianist Oscar Levant. The words of Todd Duncan and Anne Brown, the original Porgy and Bess, provide an intimate perspective on the creation of Gershwin’s “folk opera” and the invaluable contributions of its performers. Peppered among hits like “Embraceable You” and “Love Is Here To Stay” are pieces of essays written by George Gershwin in which he pondered and pontificated on the meaning of “jazz” and the definition of “music” itself. Asserting his constant effort to eschew genres, Gershwin wrote: “From any sound critical standpoint, labels mean nothing at all. Good music is good music, even if you call it ‘oysters.’”

Hermit

On a beautiful night when George and Melany should be celebrating their eighteenth wedding anniversary, they're engaged in an intense quarrel. "You're bored" and "no, I'm not" very quickly devolves into "I met someone, her name's Cynthia." Melany takes this news in stride, but very much not interested in letting eighteen years of marriage go to waste, she digs her heels in. Her female intuition intuiting that there's more to this than meets the eye, she pushes George to tell her what's really bugging him. George, on the other hand, wants whatever this is to end, like right now. He decides to take a walk, Melany blocks his path; one thing leads to another and the gloves come off: it's a full-on fistfight that ends tragically when George, in a fit of rage, strangles Melany to death. The following morning finds George passed out on the living room floor. He wakes up and the memories of the events from the night before wash over him, except...well, who knows if that's what really happened.

La bohème – Opéra de Monte Carlo

In the cold of winter, an exuberant poet lives in poverty with his three bohemian flatmates. His heart is warmed when he falls in love with his fragile neighbour, but then her illness takes a turn for the worse. In Opéra de Monte Carlo's production of Puccini’s beloved opera, set in Paris to the interwar period, the artists’ misery looks more like a chosen lifestyle than a suffered fate. Jean-Louis Grinda’s sumptuous staging reflects on Puccini’s romantic glorification of the precariousness of the human condition.
