When filmmaker/essayist Sasaki Yusuke accepted a job offer in the city of Tottori, the first thing he wanted to know was how many cinemas there were. The answer was depressing: just one. But when Sasaki started to explore his new home, gallivanting through its streets and alleys, he found traces of a plentiful culture of alternative screening venues. The founder of Tottori’s oldest cinema club is still organising projections; another elderly gentleman discovered the political importance of documentary films decades ago and has shared it ever since with his audiences; a curator at the city’s toy museum thought that showing animation films might deepen people’s appreciation of their exhibition. Where two or three gather in its name, there is cinema. In its emphasis on ordinary people and the social value of film screenings, Cinephilia Now is unlike any other current documentary on the love for cinema.

Yao filmed the work 1989 in the square of the C-LAB, evoking our memories of the “Tank Man” with a similar setting. It also deconstructs the significance as historic as stereotypical carried by the original image through absurd, nihilist game-playing. It is worth mentioning that the four inflatable dummy Type 59 tanks in this work were made in and delivered from China to the artist’s order. These dummy tanks are juxtaposed with the made-to-order documents, which not only reveals China’s status as the world’s factory after 2003, but also paradoxically brings a contemporary dimension to the historical image of the “Tank Man.”

작가의 아내
a sonic and moving image collaboration between Liew Niyomkarn and Chulayarnnon Siriphol, commissioned by Sofia Lemos, for the multi-platform research programme SONIC CONTINUUM. Borrowing from the language of cosmetics advertisement, mass media and Thai soap opera, the work addresses questions around voice and speech in the context of the recent mobilisations in Bangkok. Using sound synthesis, Niyomkarn contrasts melodic parallels between the Thai anthem and the popular song 'Golden Land’ with dialogues and conversations ripped from and recorded in global protest events. Drawing on these sonic granularities, Chulayarnnon folds digital noise into an otherwise common manifestation of a capitalised gendered division of affects, intimacy and politics in contemporary Thailand.
