Le Nouveau Désert

This new episode of the Notebooks is entitled The New Desert (4 March 1998 to 26 November 1998). These are years of cinematographic maturity in a world that is searching for its bearings and has not found its bearings following the collapse and disappearance of the USSR and its communist satellites. It was a period of indecision and uncertainty. Are we happy? Is one unhappy? Nobody really knows. I travel, film, watch the events that come before my camera. I travel, film, watch the events that come before my camera. But I only retain the most insignificant or the most unusual, those that do not make history but are my history. My eye lingers on what others don't look at, on the banality of things, on what television and mainstream cinema ignore.

Charles Trenet, l'enchanteur

Portrait of Charles Trenet. Twenty years after his death, this documentary offers a new look at the artist. When, in 1956, the singer appeared on television, he was 43 years old. And it is a man of 60 or even 70 years old that today's audience has known. The first Charles Trenet, the one who transported France when he was 25 or 30 years old, remains largely unknown. Yet it was this kid of genius who, at the age of 25, invented French chanson. But the archives that are scattered throughout this portrait also show that he invented a certain idea of joy. For joy in Trenet was a sport, a daily gymnastics.

Der Kampf um die Riesenflieger

Hardly noticed by the public, the largest aircraft parking lot in Europe has been built in a semi-desert in Spain. Close to the city of Teruel in the east of the country, aircraft from a wide variety of airlines have been mothballed. Their future is uncertain. Since the coronavirus crisis, these include the largest and most expensive aircraft in the world. For example, the Airbus A380 and the jumbo jet, the Boeing 747: two symbols of a decades-long "air war" between Airbus and Boeing. Four-jet airplanes are considered fuel guzzlers and CO2 sinners. Even the modern A380, which is approved for up to 853 passengers, was withdrawn from service by many airlines after just a few years of operation. Never before in the history of aviation has such an expensive series aircraft been taken out of service after such a short time. But its end is far from certain.
