Deproduction

We live in an era in which dominant LGBT agendas are increasingly revolving around themes of family, matrimony, breeding and military service. The cultural terms for social analyses and organizing around such issues requires an aggressive capitulation to peculiarly Western Humanist notions of the nuclear family, as well as private and public space. As a result, Feminist and Queer critical rejections of family structures (nuclear and otherwise) are increasingly scarce. An ability to understand the abuses of family and domestic violence as symptoms of larger institutionalized dominations becomes virtually impossible.

Anathema: The Optimist

【The Optimist】The album begins with the first song "32.63N 117.14W", which is a landmark located on a beach on the west coast of the United States, and it is the place where the protagonist of the story was last seen. The concept of the new album comes from Anathema’s earlier work [A Fine Day To Exit]. Lead guitarist Daniel Cavanagh explained: "The protagonist of the story suddenly disappeared. Where did he go? Did he start a new life or start a new life? Knocked down by fate, not accounted for, and no one knows his whereabouts." Album producer Tony Doogan [Mogwai, Belle & Sebastian, Super Furry Animals] suggested recording the album with a full orchestra, which is also Anathema A method that has not been tried in many years. Lead singer Vincent Cavanagh said: "Tony wanted to capture the drama of the band, the tension that can only be found when all the members are playing together face to face, and the results are quite admirable."

Ecology in Concrete

I wanted to document various stories around apartment buildings from the first-generation urbanologist of Seoul and also from the apartment generation who was born and raised in apartments. They have cozy memories, upcoming anxieties and inconvenient experiences in their apartments, and in addition, they have witnessed the street trees growing up all the while. I was sad to hear that the residents do not garden trees because they want to start to rebuild as soon as possible. Therefore, the life circulation of an apartment building in Korea is only 30 to 40 years.

If Frames Disappeared from the World

Frames have already disappeared from the world, but what about moving image expression? I tried making it recognized that physical frames no longer exist in modern moving image production, paradoxically by constructing a virtual film strip in a digital space. I shot frames of 8mm films one by one with a digital single-lens reflex camera with a macro-cine copy. After digitizing the frames I arranged them lengthways one by one. Now it was possible to see the virtual long strip consisted of more than 100 frames through a virtual camera from any distance. I started from the farthest distance where the each frame can be recognized and gradually dived into the film strip. By doing so the work features that it is the most essential element of film that intermittent movement generate dynamism. I’d like to suggest that disappearance of physical frames is not a niche problem that matters only when producing experimental films but a problem that all kinds of moving image expression have in common

With the theme of “film,” this tour teamed up with filmmaker Seita Yamagishi to create a structure in which four short films set in the “Metro” intersect with the music. These short films were shown during the live concert, and the music and the films were interlinked to provide a cinematic experience for the audience. A full version of the short films, including previously unreleased scenes not shown at the live concert, was also included in the later Blu-ray release.
