A Life in Six Chapters is S. Louisa Wei’s latest documentary, devoted to the writer Xiao Jun. It can be seen as part of a series of works beginning with Storm under the Sun on the Hu Feng Affair, and includes documentaries on Wang Shiwei, the cultural critic who became one of the first intellectuals to be purged by Mao in the Yan’an period; and the writer Xiao Hong, who after a six-year common-law marriage to Xiao Jun eloped to Hong Kong, where she died a tragically early death.

Sakutaro's poem "Sad Moonlit Nights" and the phrase "a dog barking at the moon" remind the viewer of a lonely young man roaming a seaside town. I thought of the image of a lonely poet = a criminal, and turned it into a story. Men roaming the streets at night, women like prostitutes, moonlit bullfights, human shadows turning into animals, clothes dancing like ghosts, etc. The song poetically depicts the desires and fantasies of men.

This is an 8mm and 16mm experimental film made during the year of Covid-19 around the time I moved back to Taiwan from Japan. I shot 8mm footage during the state of emergency in Japan and just after moving back to Taiwan. I then spent several months cutting and pasting each 8mm frame onto 16mm film. Sometimes the daily fragments were too sentimental, but the film gave me shelter.

Far away from her hometown, the little fox studies in a foreign country. The monotonous days and bare relationships make her increasingly homesick. But one day, she finds the curiosity that she had once lost and takes a new step.

Somewhere, an unassuming betel nut stand sits next to the bustling streets. There, a fair-skinned beauty named Nana tends to the shop. Many customers frequent the shop after carefully parking their cars, and yet some take far too long to come out for what should be a quick transaction. Even weirder is that often these customers come out with a dazed look on their faces, but with seemingly no purchase made and empty hands… One day A-YAO enters the shop after being persuaded by A-Hsing only to discover a hidden side to the normal-looking shop…

Deceitfully playing with stereotypes, Mantis questions whether identity is something imposed on us or something to be uncovered. The short film follows a young woman of Asian descent fulfilling the expectation of Western society. Slowly, she begins to question whether her actions are simply the result of how she has been conditioned to think and whether ultimately after so many years this has effectively become her identity. Challenging how truly comfortable we feel in our skin, Mantis cleverly poses the question of who's in charge of (de)constructing our identity.

Chen Hsiung is an old man living alone with mild dementia, who mistakes Jia-ling as his married daughter. In the congregate housing shrouded by the pandemic, they found the long lost feeling of accompanying, even just for some brief moment.

Nilufer marries her husband at a young age despite her mother’s objection. Now, with a child, life after marriage is not as wonderful as she imagined but she has to live with her choice. This documentary presents a young housewife’s life in an objective perspective. In the film, Nilufer talks about her dreams with passion, but the life she is living is totally different. She remains optimistic about her future, although it seems like she is trying to numb herself with her dreams so that she can stay strong in real life.

Lying on the bed and looking at their photographs that afternoon, she finds herself in great pain and decides to clear away all the belongings of her ex-girlfriend. During this process she receives a photograph that she doesn’t know where it came from, making her feel afraid and desperate. So she picks up her camera and sets out to revisit the places she and her ex-girlfriend have been to before, in search of an illusory answer.

In the man-made waterways of rice paddies, the water in nature must follow artificial rules. In that way, nature is made abstract, giving rise to a new form of beauty distinct from the natural state. The theme of this work is the liveliness of water as it follows the man-made course.
