The Dirty One

Based on the manga by Satosumi Takaguchi, adapted by Midori Kogane and Hidehiro Ito, and directed by Rokuro Mochizuki, this anti-hero story follows a fallen boxer turned extortionist. Takasu Goro, once forced out of boxing by a fixed match, now runs a front as a private detective while blackmailing targets ranging from students to yakuza bosses. Feared for his ruthless methods, he’s known as “the dirty one”. His intellectually disabled sister Keiko befriends a man named Osho at her favorite riverside spot. When a yakuza executive is killed, Goro tries to extort the boss for 100 million yen—triggering Keiko’s kidnapping.

Closing Time

A down-and-out scriptwriter spends his days and nights in the bars of Tokyo. When he is thrown out of a joint because it is closing time, there is always a willing lady to spend the rest of the night with. In the street he has countless semi-philosophical discussions with fellow drinkers, male and female, (shot in black-and-white, as prologue to the different chapters) but in the end it often comes down to one thing: the bottle of whisky that has to be finished. An encounter with a homeless young man with AIDS marks a turning point in the life of the writer.

The Hit-and-Run Family

Set in the 1990s, this film uses black humour to cast a sharp, satirical eye at the problems facing modern Japanese families. Hiroshi accidentally hits a young woman with his car and flees in panic. This coming-of-age film delicately depicts the protagonist's personal growth with a documentary touch, incorporating descriptions of the climate of Miyako Island and the actual people who weave the Miyako Kamifu cloth.
