Frankenstein (Re)Membered

Since its publication 200 years ago, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein has influenced vast swathes of popular culture. Adaptations have starred cinema legends from Boris Karloff to Robert De Niro – and even Alvin and the Chipmunks. From tales of science gone mad (Jurassic Park) to stories of understanding the other (ET, The Hulk, Arrival), traces of the story and its themes have spread across our media. With Frankenstein Re-membered, video artist and film historian Chris Gerrard collects these diverse fragments from the birth of cinema until the present day and in the tradition of Victor Frankenstein himself, attempts to stitch them back together into an adaptation of the original Shelley novel.

The Young Fan

In 1997, cartoonist Gipi was just starting his career when he received a letter from a fifteen-year-old fan who, expressing his love for his drawings and stories, asked only for a dedication that read "To Francesco." In 2017, Gipi discovered that this person had done the same thing to many other cartoonists over the course of twenty years, writing the same letter over and over again, always declaring his fifteenth birthday, expressing the same love for each recipient, and asking the same thing of each. With three friends, he then decided to search for the boy.

The Amorous Indies

Les Indes Galantes (The amorous indies), is an opera-ballet created by Jean Philippe Rameau in 1735. He was inspired for one of the dance by tribal Indian dances of Louisiana performed by Metchigaema chiefs, in Paris in 1723. Clément Cogitore adapts a short part of the ballet by mobilizing a group of Krump dancers, an art form born in Los Angeles black ghetto in the 1990s. Its birth occurred in the aftermath of the beating up of Rodney King and the riots, as well as police repression it triggered. Amidst this coercive atmosphere, young dancers started to embody the violent tensions of the physical, social and political body. Both the tribal dance performed in Paris in 1723, and the rebelious Krump dancers of the 1990s shape a reenactment of Rameau’s original libretto, staging young people dancing on the verge of a volcano.

Les Malheurs de Charles Tait

Les Malheurs de Charles Tait reveals the ravages of time on the print of the film The Story of the Kelly Gang , considered by some to be the first feature-length fiction film in the history of cinema, which Charles Tait shot in 1906. (I use the conditional tense because there is doubt about the film's duration: only fragments survive, and its exact length is unknown.) By selecting and slowing down the most damaged parts of the Australian filmmaker's film, I have managed to create an object with abstract forms and, paradoxically, to breathe new life into a major work of art.

Wake Up

It is the story of Francisco's worst nightmare. A father who sees how his adolescent and adored daughter Inés is courted by Rogelio, the newly arrived cousin of his sensual neighbor Vanessa. This fact causes Francisco to begin to develop during the day a problem of dissociation from reality (or awake sleep) and sleepwalking at night, where he believes that his daughter has been taken away from him. This situation, together with the doubt about the nature of the relationship he maintains with the neighbor, leads him to madness.
