It can't always be summer

It's a documentary that examines the development of a group of teenage kids from the outskirts of Naples and their involvement in a theatre group. Chiara Stella, Domenico and Alessio are all 15 years old and every Monday they go to theatre classes at the Centro Asterix, a recreational space with a small theatre, located in San Giovanni in Teduccio, a district in the eastern suburbs of Naples. The film closely follows the relationships between the children and their teachers; Nicola encourages the children to look into themselves and find ways of facing life with a conscious and above all calm approach. The stories, the needs and personalities of Chiara Stella, Domenico and Alessio emerge through crises, successes and reflection; they open up to each other thanks to the methods and direction of Nicola and through improvisation on the stage. The theatre thus becomes a space for discussion and self-analysis.

Late Season

In the opening scene we are witness to an old man’s lament about a world he no longer understands. Subsequent sequences gradually introduce us to various inhabitants of an unspecified southern Italian village and to the many bizarre situations in which the characters of the three vaguely adumbrated stories appear. Although some of them meet on a daily basis, the viewer receives scant information about their relationships, let alone their lives, and with no plot context. Nevertheless, the tone generated by the artfully composed shots and musical accompaniment suggests something inauspicious, even subliminally disturbing. The film, the script of which earned director Caputo the Mattador International Screenwriting Award, seeks to explore the typical Italian provincial world where the effort to be new and modern clashes with a commitment to deeply rooted traditions.

Mothers

Angela is a successful writer, widowed and wealthy. Her son Sean was born in London where he attends university, while she lives in a small town in northern Italy. Fatima is Maghreb like her husband but her children Nadia and Tarik were born in Italy: Nadia married an Italian Catholic against the wishes of her Muslim father and Tarik studies in England. The English university is the place where the destinies of Sean and Tarik meet because they both fall under the influence of Omar, a recruiter on behalf of the Jihad. Sean and Tarik, inflamed by the man's words, will enlist to fight in Syria, throwing their respective mothers into despair. Angela and Fatima's paths cross at a psychological support group run by Dr. Diana. The group also includes Israeli Sam, who killed a terrorist before he carried out a massacre, Claire, whose husband and son died in a jihadist air strike, and Eric, whose daughter Sofia joined the freedom fighters, coincidentally as Omar's concubine.

Our Father

It is the year of grace of 1950. Ignacio (11) is celebrating his First Communion, a step that, according to catholics, puts him closer to God and opens up a space for him in the believers community. Communion implies, he will have enough grace to go to Paradise one day. It is also the day he is declared as a “conscious” person. However, from long time before, his tutor, sister Josefa, and the priest of the church, have said terrible things about his dead father, a communist that by now, as they say, should be burning in hell’s fire.
