God Is a Woman

In 1975 French Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Pierre Dominique Gaisseau traveled to Panama to make a film on the indigenous island-dwelling Kuna people. Accompanied by his wife and their daughter, Gaisseau lived with the Kuna for a year, gaining their trust and filming their most intimate ceremonies. He promised to share the resulting film with the community, but that never happened. Fifty years later, the Kunas are still waiting to discover “their” film, now a legend passed down from the elders to the new generation. One day, a hidden copy is found in Paris…While uncovering this fascinating story with humility and warmth, Swiss-Panamanian filmmaker Andrés Peyrot succeeds in capturing a true sense of culture and place. The result is simultaneously a cautionary tale raising questions around how and why documentaries are made and for whom, and a testament to the power of what it means to see yourself on the big screen.

Baroque concert featuring countertenor Jakub Józef Orlinski | Works by Handel, Cavalli and others

Exceptional baroque concert given by countertenor Jakub Józef Orlinski and the ensemble Il Pomo d'Oro on 21 July 2021 at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse. The program entitled “Facce d'Amore” includes 8 world premieres. Each piece tells a story that depicts the male figure in the Baroque era - and not only the positive aspects, such as the pleasure of mutual love, but also anger and even madness. Spanning a period of almost 85 years, the arias in “Facce d'Amore” are by Handel, Cavalli, Boretti, Bononcini, Conti, Locatelli, Orlandini, and others. Accompanied by the musicians of Il Pomo d'Oro – an Italian ensemble conducted by Zefira Valova – Jakub Jozef Orliński delights in performing these pieces with precision and a sense of theatricality. The magnificent Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse is the ideal setting for one of the most dazzling countertenors of his generation to explore the rare gems of 17th and 18th century Italian opera.

The prototype [TEST TYPE • 154] is a highly sophisticated artificial intelligence, which is capable of autonomously acquiring notions from its surroundings and - eventually - developing autonomy of thought. Given the nearly human nature of its learning capabilities, the laboratory that programmed it hires a kindergarten teacher, asking him to instruct the machine as if it were a newborn child. The learning process - which spans 7 days - becomes increasingly insidious in the long run, posing a peculiar yet crucial problem: can there be a form of autonomous thinking that excludes emotions?

The RedRoom

We open this tale with the sight of a bloodied, handsome well-to-do man, staggering around East London. We close the film enjoying the rare glimpse into the everyday backstage camaraderie of women who strip for a living. What lies between is a whodunit without the traditional victim or perpetrator. If there is a perpetrator, it is masculine entitlement fuelled by ridiculous ideas about female bodies. The only real victim of this film is the traditional easy trope of sensationalised violence against women and our persistent societal dishonesty about sex work.
