When the Mist Clears

Isabella is a disconnected and angry young woman. Her life was shattered at 13 when her Italian mother died of cancer. Her successful British father Frank, who harbors a painful secret, chose to lose himself with work and outsource Isabella’s care and upbringing to nanny’s, tutors and eventually therapists. Many years later Frank had remarried to a wonderful Italian woman, Claudia, who manages to convince Frank that they all need to get away from work, from the city, from internet and spend a month close to nature on a remote Italian country estate and hopefully reconnect to each other.

A few days before Christmas, having quit his job in Germany, Matthias returns to his Transylvanian village. He wishes to involve himself more in the education of his son, Rudi, left for too long in the care of his mother, Ana, and to rid him of the unresolved fears that have gripped him. He’s also eager to see his ex-lover Csilla and preoccupied about his old father, Otto. When a few new workers are hired at the small factory that Csilla manages, the peace of the community is disturbed, underlying fears grip the adults, and frustrations, conflicts and passions erupt through the thin sliver of apparent understanding and calm.

XXI

XXI guides the audience through the Buenos Aires cityscape— from a car wheel spinning towards dancer Andrés Andino as he vogues through an alley in angel wings, pas vast glass lobbies in the upscale Palermo neighborhood, into an apartment where two men dance. On one level XXI is an exploration of the power dynamics of intergeneration gay sexual relationships, which often see older, wealthier men hosting younger, poorer ones. On another, it’s about the process of transformation: from youth to old age, from stranger to lover, from mobility to stasis. Like the glass lobbies, XXI offers us a glimpse into private space that we are unable fully to access. The city acts as a silent stage for the couple’s pas-de-deux.
