One day after class, students Richard and LAM Mak-noeng, a mysteriously masked girl who shares the same name as the Empress of Heaven, come to her for help. It turns out that Mak-noeng is about to disappear. Faced with such an ethereal problem, Ning takes on the responsibility of a storyteller and seeks a happy ending for this heavenly romance. The director, who has always been interested in urban issues, has continued to mix historical and fantastical elements like he has done with Interview with Lo-Ting: An Oral History Project (2022). A modern love story with celestial inspiration, the film gently caresses the remnants of our city and the melancholy of lonely souls.

In the Face of Demolition

This early leftist social drama from Hong Kong offers a panoramic portrait of a crumbling apartment complex and its down-and-out denizens, including a taxi driver, an unemployed teacher, a professional reduced to selling his blood and, of course, a venal landlord. In addition to establishing an omnipresent theme in Hong Kong cinema – the plight of the urban poor – the film is also a prime example of the popular melodramas of the time, which featured displaced Mainland film stars.

The Final Night of the Royal Hong Kong Police

The film consists of two police stories. Both of them happened within the last few days prior to the Hong Kong Handover in 1997. Part 1 - One Body Two Flags is about two middle age cops on the way to the airport, looking back on Hong Kong and at their own lives. It explores the bomb issues during the 1967 Hong Kong Riot, and the police uprising against the anti-corruption agency, ICAC, in 1978. Part 2 - The 5th depicts the turbulent love relationship between a young traffic police and his pro-democracy activist girlfriend amid the major political movement in 1989, and the 1997Hong Kong Handover. The title came from Beethoven's 5th Symphony which was used by the police to drown out the demonstrations on that fateful night.
