The melancholy of a river landscape in the north, through which the wind carries stories of the creative goddess. And the snippet of a song won't leave your head.

In seven scenes set in South America, the film deals with the various conflicts and (power) relationships between men and women. The individual episodes also deal with specific female role models: the bride, the wife, the rival, the abandoned, the fiancée, the abused and the determined. The scenes show a passionate, romantic longing for love, but also the harsh reactions when a promise of happiness is not so easily fulfilled. It is about heartbreak and longing, jealousy and hatred, exploitation and self-inflicted submission. Nevertheless, the basic tone remains hopeful. The stylized images are structured by off-screen commentary and tango rhythms.

Even the military academy can't stop kind-hearted officer Gottfried Engelhardt from seeing the world through rose-colored glasses. Everything in the young GDR is blooming: Engelhardt's career, the socialist state, the black market, and maybe even a chance at love.

The opera singer Ludwig Löwenhaupt wants a proper festive roast for Christmas, so he buys a goose in advance to feed the whole family. What he doesn't realize, however, is that the children, Elli, Gerda and Peterle, will grow fond of the animal, which is christened Gustje, and will no longer want to eat it. After the "liberation", the "five kilos of meat", which were initially locked up in the cellar, become a pet that the children take to bed with them and communicate with. But shortly before Christmas, father Löwenhaupt still wants to slaughter them. However, as his family protests and his conscience gets in the way, he can't slaughter the goose after all. So Gustje only has to leave a few feathers as proof that she has been plucked, and the opera singer is given another goose that has already been cut up.

So now there are two couples and a dancer in one room, and even the pull-out folding screen is no solution. Everyone discovers a stranger, half-dressed, almost dressed, in the bathroom, in the beds, in the room.

They are assembled as a collage, with individual scenes and images being repeated throughout.

It is a long and hard process of acclimation, but eventually the business of love becomes a profession for Sarah. The power of money holds her captive. And the more she succeeds in increasing her value in the milieu, the more she distances herself from her past bourgeois world - along with her concepts of love, decency and morality. An affair almost becomes her undoing. Sarah flees deeper into the labyrinth - onto the path of venal masochism. She becomes a whip-wielding dominatrix in the notorious Herbertstraße. Now the others are the victims, but Sarah almost loses her mind...

Chamberlain, Mussolini and their aides attend a 1938 performance of Macbeth in Rome. This audience is itself made into the raw material of opera. The site of the negotiations between Chamberlain and Hitler, which resulted in the invasion of Czechoslovakia, is diagrammed, and Chamberlain and his aides are charged with lack of fantasy, a fatal flaw. Meanwhile, in September 1939 a Nazi officer's happy love story is interrupted only to be resumed (we are told) in 1953, as he comes back from Soviet captivity. A film clip of two bodies in the midst of war devastation asks, "Why are you crying, Antonio? Are you afraid to die?" The theme of "a new beginning" is the fantasy outcome here, as a "film" in computer graphics shows a parade of French soldiers in 1918 celebrating the end of war in disbelief and hunger for freedom.

A long-term observation from 1977-1980, focusing on the apprentice Gerd and his family. Gerd wants to become an electrician, but after several rejections he accepts an apprenticeship as a lathe operator at Ford. In the first two years he works in an apprentice workshop, in the third year he has to go into production; from now on he is under a lot of pressure, because the company keeps the decision as to whether to take on an apprentice as a normal employee open until the last moment. When Gerd talks about the apprenticeship at home and criticizes the training, his parents reprimand him. They say: You'd better put something away! He shouldn't stand out in the company. The work of a lathe operator is increasingly being taken over by automatic machines. Gerd realizes that he is learning a trade that no one will need any more soon.
