The Storytellers

A small poor community called Javé is under threat of being flooded by a new dam that is being built, and the only way to prevent this is to prove the town's historical value. As most of the inhabitants are illiterate, they have no choice but to ask for the help of Antônio Biá, a man who has been ostracized ever since it was discovered that he had sent out letters with lies about their reputations as a way to keep his job in Javé's seldom-used post office. He now has the task of documenting people's memories of how the city was founded, yet each inhabitant has his or her own version of what happened.

A Maldita

On March 1, 1982, the city of Niterói enters history and hosts one of the most important cultural movements: a so-called Rock 80 Generation. Radio Fluminense FM, known as “A Maldita”, goes on the air, mixing irreverence, daring and creativity with its programming aimed at music that lacks commercial space. The boldness of believing in the new made “Maldita” become one of the main alternative communication vehicles, launching Brazilian rock groups and independent music and creating a legion of fans.

Bread and People

Dispossessed in an essay about the daily bread. In a country like Brasil, of such abyssal social inequality as there is here, it's urgent for me in cinema to talk about the class to which I belong, the class-who-lives-on-labor. And, alongside that, about the labor relations, the survival, the unemployment, the increasingly impoverished life, the small popular uprisings and the confrontations with the non natural order of things. In "Bread and People", we deal with ruins. And in the struggle of the old against the new, we face mainly the ruin of an idea of progress, and the debris of a critical anti capitalist art today. We've deepened our investigation of an epic, historical and dialectical cinema, using the materials of inspiration themselves.

Black Goddess

A Deusa Negra is a love story that spans two centuries. In 18th century Yorubaland, Prince Oluyole is taken prisoner in the course of internecine warfare fanned by overseas slave traders. He is sold into slavery in Brazil. In present day Nigeria, at his father's deathbed, the young Babatunde promises to go to Brazil and search for traces of their once-enslaved ancestors. Beginning with a Candomblé ritual, his journey takes him ever deeper into this culture and, in a dream-like sequence, affords him a deeper understanding of his ancestors' suffering and powers of resistance. Balogun effortlessly links present with past, real with magical worlds and discourse with trance. The hypnotic atmosphere is also heightened by the music of the Nigerian drummer Remi Kabaka, which plays with repetitive patterns and distortions.
