Bangkok Joyride 5: Dancing with Death

As before, there is no narration, no special VIP access, no set up; only direct experience on the streets which those who rule the world do not want us to remember. Part 5 of Shutdown Bangkok’s forbidden history from 2014, that marathon exercise in mass ahimsa Thai style, covers the blood-soaked Valentine’s “week they killed the children”–in central Bangkok by RPG rocket and in Trad by sniper fire. As the violence gets more explicit and protesters turn police cars into installation art, reality itself, as reflected in the film, becomes correspondingly more horrific and absurd. PS: Now that they have the full taste of their own Mr T Rex, American Anti-Trump protesters might even realise they have a lot to learn from people they’ve been calling undemocratic savages.

Bugsyder: The Crazy Hero

The humour, the anarchy, the glorious fun—its tagline says it all: “Of the Psycho Who Steals Underwear”. Total absurdity right off the bat, as a suited pervert harassing stewardesses in a white aeroplane suddenly finds himself dropped among buffaloes in a field in Isan. Iconic Isan farang movie star Martin Wheeler is the village headman who can’t live without inhaling his wife’s cleavage. Despite the cartoonish, sped-up and silly veneer, it has strong resonance, as in the psycho freak-out scene amidst ancient ruins. Plus the cast of great faces, the acting, the camera placement and editing in this shoestring movie outshine most big budget Thai films.

SARIT & SIRA BROTHERS

A moving image captured by the director in 2025 depicts a late afternoon at a Catholic school in Thailand, as children leave for the day, mingling with teachers and parents waiting to pick them up. At a stone bench, two brothers, JAVA and JINO, are seen chatting, the elder being a friend of the director. The footage, originally shot on the director’s mobile phone, was later transformed to evoke the style of a silent film: the visuals were toned to resemble aged black-and-white film and accompanied by music from City Lights (1931) by Charlie Chaplin, enhancing the atmosphere reminiscent of the silent cinema’s final years in the early 1930s.
