Viking. To See to Believe

For eight years, a team of specialists created a whole world about which almost nothing was known. The world of Kievan Rus of the tenth century. They managed to make historical films with documentary accuracy. Icelandic sagas and the works of Oriental travelers, Byzantine books and, of course, ancient Russian chronicles were studied and researched. The oldest dated chronicle is kept in the Russian National Library in St. Petersburg. It was these texts that formed the basis of the script. Five built cities, hand—sewn costumes, forged weapons, a Viking ship — a drakkar — built according to the drawings of that time, complex computer graphics - all in order for the viewer to fully immerse himself in the atmosphere of the early Middle Ages of the Viking film.

The Black Monk

Based on the short story by Anton Chekhov, Kama Ginkas’ astounding reimagining highlights and builds off of the Chekhovian tension between the beauty of life and the tragedy of how it is lived. The story tells the the tale of philosophy student Andrey Vasil'ich Kovrin. On the verge of a nervous breakdown, Kovrin decides to visit his childhood friend Tanya Pesotsky at the estate of her father. As he and Tanya develop a relationship and eventually marry, a black monk of legend begins appearing to Kovrin in visions. Though these hallucinations at first imbue the young man with joy and energy, they eventually lead to his ruin.

The Last Waltz

This film is about Oleg Karavaichuk, eccentric musical genius and famous St. Petersburg composer, who takes his final stroll through Komarovo, a bay-side summer community just outside St. Petersburg where he spent his whole life and wrote most of his works. His final piece, “The Komarovo Waltz”, unveiled here for the very first time, was written as a tribute to the place. The film is the reclusive composer’s eulogy to the community. It also serves as Karavoichuk’s farewell to audience as well as his last address and reminder of things that are truly important – love for your fellow man and virgin nature.

Petr Vyazemsky decides to die. He is intelligent, but weak. He has had many trials. He was insulted and humiliated by a bully. A young man, but already strong and severe. What to do? And Peter Ivanovich dared: stole the boor, put him on a chain in his village house and began to re-educate, strongly trying to make this bully more human with the help of science, poetry, music. He made him a condition: if the prisoner passed the exam, he would be released. And if not, he would die... In a month of intensive studies, Vyazemsky makes the impossible: the bully becomes interested in studying! And the professor himself discovers a warm feeling for the object of his pedagogical experiment... And now he doesn't want to part with his new friend. For this he has to do the worst thing for an honest man - to break his word.

Vasily Pronchishchev and Vasily Chelyuskin were young lieutenants of the Russia fleet, who set out from Yakutsk along the Lena River to the Arctic Ocean on a sailing ship under the leadership of the commander Vitus Bering in the summer of 1735. Contrary to the imperial prohibition, incredible trials and deadly danger lying ahead of all the members of this expedition, a young girl enamored with one of the characters got onto this ship. However, neither storms or severe northern frosts and hunger were able to stop them, since fulfilling of their duty, reaching of the most northeastern point of Eurasia and putting of the vast Arctic territories on the world maps were their main purpose in life.

A visual work at the intersection of cinema and performance, game and documentary approach. The project refers to the corporeality of human nature, the teachings of Mikhail Bakhtin about the carnival culture of the Middle Ages, quantum physics and the theory of relativity. Filming took place in the summer and autumn of 2015 on the wild beaches of the Crimea, where there has long been a culture of seasonal nudist settlements. Residents of these settlements voluntarily became participants in the project.

Born in 1949 in Leningrad. In 1968 he graduated from the Art College.Serova. In 1977, an exhibition of film engineers was held in the Recreation Center. Until 1981, he participated in numerous "apartment" exhibitions. In 1981– an exhibition at the Kirov Recreation Center (Experimental Art Association); In 1987 – Montreal, Paris; In 1992– Finland, and in 1999— an exhibition at the Luxembourg Consulate. Thematic solo exhibitions of the artist are constantly held in St. Petersburg. Participant of exhibitions since 1977. Member of the Board (1981), TSPH (2002). He worked as a decorative artist at the V. F. Komissarzhevskaya Theater (1974-1976); as a locksmith in the Emergency Recovery Service of the Technical Technical University (1976-1980); as a production designer at the Experiment Theater (1983).
