The Harvest

Gurwinder comes from Punjab, he’s been working for years as a farm hand in Agro Pontino, not far from Rome. Since he first came in Italy, he’s been living with the rest of the Sikh community in Latina province. Hardeep is also Indian, but her stress is Roman, and she works as a cultural mediator. She, born and raised in Italy, is trying to free herself from the memories of a family that emigrated in another age, while he is forced, against his faith, to take methamphetamine and doping to bear the heavy work pace, to be able to send money in India.

The Gospel According to Mattei

A cinic director and his assistant come back to Basilicata, their homeland, looking for redemption. 50 years aged and aristically loser, they try to shoot a rickety investigative movie titled "Il Vangelo secondo Mattei" in the same location where Pasolini filmed his "The Gospel According to St. Matthew" but focusing on the disasters caused by oil extractions in their wasteland of Basilicata, in the south of Italy. As main character, they choose Franco, 70 years old, that was an extra in Pasolini film...

A passionate portrait that reflects on the fate of small cinemas and on the difficulties for independent cinema that is suffocated by the laws of the market, by online streaming and by the television.

Mothers

Angela is a successful writer, widowed and wealthy. Her son Sean was born in London where he attends university, while she lives in a small town in northern Italy. Fatima is Maghreb like her husband but her children Nadia and Tarik were born in Italy: Nadia married an Italian Catholic against the wishes of her Muslim father and Tarik studies in England. The English university is the place where the destinies of Sean and Tarik meet because they both fall under the influence of Omar, a recruiter on behalf of the Jihad. Sean and Tarik, inflamed by the man's words, will enlist to fight in Syria, throwing their respective mothers into despair. Angela and Fatima's paths cross at a psychological support group run by Dr. Diana. The group also includes Israeli Sam, who killed a terrorist before he carried out a massacre, Claire, whose husband and son died in a jihadist air strike, and Eric, whose daughter Sofia joined the freedom fighters, coincidentally as Omar's concubine.

Director Alessandro Comodin recounts for Fuori Orario the genesis of his two films, "Summer of Giacomo" and "Happy times will come soon" and reflects on his own conception of cinema: the need for escape and movement, the adolescence of moving bodies and the perception of passing time, the importance of locations and immersion in nature, the technical practice during filming, the approach to the cinematographic medium as a way to see better and to establish a relationship of sensory capture of reality, the relationship with the actors. With references to his favorite filmmakers, from Bresson and Monteiro to Wang Bing, and to the recurring images of his films: the hole and the labyrinth, the loop of time and epilogues, the fairy tale and metamorphosis.
