Festive Land: Carnival in Bahia

Festive Land examines one of the largest and most extraordinary popular celebrations in the world, the week-long Carnival that brings more than two million people to the streets of Salvador, the capital of Bahia, in northeastern Brazil. Carnival is the most expressive showcase of the unique cultural richness of Bahia, where African culture has survived, prospered, and evolved, mixing with other Brazilian influences to create forms found nowhere else in the world. The film captures this unique cultural energy through extraordinary footage of musical performances, dances, religious manifestations, and street celebrations. At the same time, Carnival reflects the racial and social tensions of Brazil's heterogeneous society. At first glance there appear to be two million people chaotically mixed on the streets, but a more detailed look reveals how patterns of segregation driven by racial, social and economic differences continue in Carnival.

Ex-It

Freely inspired by the work Catatau, by Paulo Leminski, the plot begins with the historical hypothesis imagined by the poet from Curitiba: “What if René Descartes had come to Brazil with Maurício de Nassau?” The film materializes this hypothesis and joins the father of modern philosophy in his journey through the tropics. Under the effect of hallucinatory herbs, he investigates questions revolving around geometry and optics in the face of an absolutely strange world. Known for his famous sentence “I think, therefore I am”, Descartes faces his doubt towards phenomena reason doesn’t explain. René, Renatus, Re born.

A Sensational Crime

Following the trend of all world production, this was another film based on a true crime chronicle, based on the murder of industrialist Adolfo Freire by gardener Augusto Henriques, which took place in Rio de Janeiro. No copy of Um Crime Sensacional survives, only 1 image from the film is known, which was placed in the magazine "Cinemin". It is not known whether the film was a "sound" film, that is, with actors dubbing themselves live behind the screen based on already recorded images. The only proof that the film could be a sound film is a 1913 song called "O Crime de Paula Matos" by Joaquim Pacheco, which may have been used in the sound versions of the film. This song is currently lost.

Chantal Akerman, From Here

Invented by the post-New Wave, the exercise is well-known: put a filmmaker in the frame, make him talk about his career, evoke his admirations, rummage in his methods, and add words to silences, spoken images to seen images. It’s always very instructive. As is the case here too. Chantal Akerman, passing through South America, talks about herself for an hour, and it’s fascinating. Even if her recalling of the relationship between the cinema and time makes up only a few rare minutes.

A highway movie

Four researchers record their perceptions as they walk through the patch of the BR-116 that goes through Canoas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, looking for characters who’ve had their lives connected throughout the highway. The BR-116, the largest road in Brazil, crosses 10 states and connects Fortaleza to the municipality of Jaguarão, at the Uruguayan border, while also going through Canoas, splitting the city in two. The documentary brings testimonies from different people who share their life stories. “A Highway Movie” (2025) is the work that concludes Wender Zanon’s trilogy on Canoas, which starts with “This Is Canoas, Not Poa” (2021), followed by “Essays on a city” (2024).
