The Earl, His Lover, the Escort and Her Brother

Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 10th Earl of Shaftesbury, was one of Britain's wealthiest men, a scion of a historic family whose assets included grand properties in the UK and France, a 9,000-acre estate, and works of art worth tens of millions of pounds. Anthony split his time between his ancestral family home in Dorset and the French Riviera, where he enjoyed a hedonistic lifestyle of drink, drugs, and sex, all funded by his multi-million-pound inheritance. When in France, the earl met Jamila M-Barek through an escort agency, and when she claimed to be pregnant by him in 2002, they married, making her the third Countess of Shaftesbury. Their relationship, however, grew strained, and they separated. In 2004, the earl asked for a divorce after meeting Nadie Orche, a club hostess and young mother of two. Shortly after, the earl disappeared, and the press speculated that the Mafia had abducted him and forced him to hand over his wealth.

When the Dust Settles

A new participatory documentary follows the lives of refugee families from Sudan and Ethiopia after reunion in the UK. Four families share the challenges of navigating everyday life hurdles as refugees, showing how complex memories and fears are mixed with new hopes and future plans for themselves and their children. Participant families chose to share these experiences in juxtaposition with everyday life activities like cooking, eating, or going to the park, revealing the humanity of their lives and raising awareness of the importance of living together in safety. The film offers a counter narrative to the current political focus on reinforcing border control and is a result of a research project conducted by the School of International Development at the University of East Anglia, in partnership with Together Now, and funded by the British Academy and the UEA ADR Impact Fund (Higher Education Research Funding).

Fade Away

A triptych portrait of life adrift in the post-industrial peripheries, Fade Away sketches out three seemingly disconnected moments on a day and a night in the deep south of London. A young man, off-the-grid, wanders the backstreets in search of something. Three girls reach their limit and act to break free. And a worker, far from home, finds herself something like a role in the city. Is it a prison? Fade Away is a vivid picture of isolation and the experience of feeling lost in a changing landscape.

Homoperspectives

During the UK Covid-19 lockdowns the artist kept a daily visual diary in the form of digital collages or GIFs. ‘HOMOPERSPECTIVES’ contains selected extracts from the visual diary. Each individual GIF reflects upon themes such as mental health, the virus, love, sex (be)longing, (in)visibility, (im)possibilities and the day-to-day. The male figures in this series were extracted from pre-1950s photography, vintage gay adult magazines and the works of Bob Mizer and Tom of Finland to name a few. What’s most notable about these works is how the function of the male figures function changes from the erotic(-objective) to a more emotive context.
