On April 1st, single mother Maria and her ten-year-old son Micha move into a new apartment located in the Berlin district Marzahn. On the very first evening, Maria gets an invitation from her neighbor Alvaro, a political emigrant from Uruguay who keeps working for his country’s Communist Party while staying in the GDR. Maria and Alvaro fall passionately in love. Even Micha, who is suspicious of Alvaro in the beginning, eventually becomes friend with him. Thus, nothing stands in the way of their happiness – except for the certainty that Alvaro will have to leave as soon as he gets a new assignment.

Despite their youth, the girls are suspicious because they have already experienced a lot. The girls do not suspect that they should be used by the Springer company to provoke a scandal. But the Ministry of State Security has the action already in sight.

Civil engineer Berger is looking for his mother and learns that she has died and was last in a home run by the notorious construction company Huberty. When the company boss Huberty becomes the victim of an assassination attempt shortly afterwards, suspicion falls on Berger, but Huberty's death is linked to the fraudulent bankruptcy of the construction company. The boss's wife is found to be the culprit. An unpleasant surprise awaits Berger, a civil engineer from Hamburg, when he returns home after years of working in Mexico: his mother has disappeared. Her tracks are lost in a "retirement home" run by the Huberty Society. Berger suspects that his mother has been the victim of a crime. He hunts a murderer and becomes the hunted himself...

Mrs. Wiesner has the fate of her family firmly under control. In her cramped janitor's apartment, she toils for the happiness and future of her children, who are supposed to be better off one day. Her daughter Helen thinks she is happily married to an American millionaire. Their son Herbert has managed to pass his A-levels with great difficulty and, unfortunately for him, is supposed to study medicine. Only the youngest daughter goes her own way, working as a waitress and socializing with foreigners. Nevertheless, everything seems to be in perfect order for mother Wiesner: her husband, a streetcar driver for the public transport company, is to inaugurate the latest streetcar as the crowning glory of his career. But as life goes: Happiness cannot always be steered into predetermined paths and sometimes things turn out differently than you would wish. When Helen unexpectedly returns from America with her child, Mrs. Wiesner's happiness begins to fade.

It's first shown shortly after the discussion's participants have been introduced, a second time after the end of the discussion. His passion for hunting almost spells doom for the sales manager of a GDR convenience store: his ambition to shoot a big buck just before the start of the closed season leads him to fall for a joke played by his son. He has tied horns to a prize-winning breeding goat, leading the hunter on the wrong track. While he tries to cover up the incident, there is a great deal of excitement in the village; resentment and schadenfreude arise, intrigues are played out and village gossip makes the rounds.
