Trespassing World Cities

Trespassing World Cities records how I struggled away from the tourist video style to seek for an impersonal form to pose my response to a world of big cities whose individual distinctive is increasingly blurred. This is a travel journal in the literal sense of the term. The video records my walking through a dozen of major cities around the world, repeating routes and activities, between 1999 and 2005. The mythology of the multiple colors of diverse world cultures shatters. I found myself doing the same things, repeating places I have visited, and inside my mind is often a totally different world irrelevant to the places I visit. Globalization is a popular catch word, the token of economism. Personally speaking, it is a form of irony.

Door Game

Door Game is a narrative game playing with the found footage of a number of family ethics melodramas from HK Cantonese cinema of the 1950s and 1960s. By re-assembling loose fragments into some kind of coherent structures, I reveal the hidden logic of the genre, exposing the repetitive elements. Through story-creation, my critique of the gender-biased, formulaic quality inherent to Cantonese melodramas evolves. The Last Summer

The film documents a group of underground conceptual artists and performance artists active in the folk art scene of Chengdu, China. It captures their process of engaging in underground art creation and organizing underground art exhibitions during the summer of 1999, the final summer of the 20th century. The summer of 1999 was a tumultuous period in Chinese politics. It marked the tenth anniversary of the Tiananmen Square incident in 1989, the outbreak of the "Falun Gong incident," and the moment when Taiwan's leader, Lee Teng-hui, made the "two-state theory" declaration, almost leading to a war between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait. These underground artists used their creations to reflect their understanding and perspectives on Chinese history and contemporary society. However, their actions were constantly under official surveillance.

Q2008

Inspired by automatic painting machines and looking for a way to replicate the effect in a digital space, Mengbo discovered that within the code for the video game Quake III Arena there existed a parameter called r_drawworld. After changing the parameter from it's default of 0 to 1, he found it was possible to capture a sequence of animation in one frame, which he used to create a painting machine from entirely within in the game's engine. His live painting efforts using this technique are showcased and set to a Hawaiian music soundtrack.
