This film has two parts. In the first part, the film material is on 8mm uncut film, so that in the 16mm projection a 4-fold film can be seen. In the second part of the film, the 16mm film is shown in full size, that means the picture is now enlarged four times its size. Michel, a writer of detective novels, is married to Pat, a pretty woman he's been neglecting. One day, the results of a private investigation reveal that his wife is cheating on him. But he'd never contacted a private detective before. The facts are all the more disturbing in that they coincide with the detective story he is writing with his beautiful young secretary. Pat is murdered and found next to her dying lover, who is said to have attempted suicide. But the police soon realize that this is a double murder. The investigation develops; Michel is strongly suspected, as many presumptions seem to weigh heavily on him. The outcome of the investigation brings a surprise that clears Michel's name.

All of Pialat's Turkish films are uniquely interested in the country — especially Istanbul — as it was, not just as it is at the precise moment that Pialat is filming it. History informs these films in a big way, with the voiceover narration (which incorporates excerpts from various authors) introducing tension between the images of the modern-day city and the descriptions of incidents from its long and rich history. Istanbul is probably the most conventional documentary of Pialat's Turkish series, providing a general profile of the titular city, its different neighborhoods, and the different cultures and ways of living that coexist within its sprawling borders. As the other films in the series also suggest, Pialat sees Turkey, and Istanbul in particular, as a junction point between Europe and the East, between the old and the new, between history and modernity.
