Incontri 1969 - Roberto Rossellini: i segreti di un mito

An hour with Roberto Rossellini. Interviewed by Gregoretti, the director of Paisà and Europa 51 retraces his life, his work, his relationship with the young critics of the Cahiers du Cinéma who would become the authors of the French New Wave, but also talks about his participation in the May '68 events in Paris. Passing from one theme to another emerges the thought of one of the key figures of the last century and not only in the cinematographic field, a lucid and passionate vision, typical of Rossellini, which combines science, conscience and knowledge and an obstinate faith in the capacities of Man.

This is the journal of an expedition that, starting from the oasis town of Djanet, embarked on a 12-day journey guided by a member of the Algerian Tourism Club to discover the rock paintings of Tassili n'Ajjer in southeastern Algeria. These paintings date back to prehistoric times (10,000 to 5,000 years ago) and are located on an uninhabited rocky plateau whose highest point reaches 2,158 meters. Considered one of the largest and oldest "open-air rock art museums" in the world, the Tassili n'Ajjer boasts a particularly rugged landscape: the vast rocky plains, which sometimes give way to "forests" of monoliths, are riddled with akbas (holes in the escarpments accessible only on foot or by camel) and numerous faults and canyons. The Tassili n’Ajjer National Park was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1982 and classified as a biosphere reserve in 1986.

In Montesano, Salento, during the festivities held in August in honour of Saint Donatus, patron saint of epileptics and the mentally ill, the power of collective suggestion causes strange phenomena and rituals to occur. Luigi Di Gianni, master of anthropological documentary, films the worshippers with Dionysian force as they writhe and scream as if in a pagan rite, showing how the content of the Catholic liturgy succumbs to the primitive passion of popular religiosity.

Philippe Lambert, an attractive young attaché to the Prime Minister's office, is a man of many female conquests. One of them, Madame Grandbourg, wife of a very influential man, sent him a passionate letter, which he lost at the theater. Marion, the usherette who found it, contacts him to ask him for a "favor" in exchange for its return: to avoid eviction from the family apartment, because of the father, who gardens in every room and constantly floods the downstairs neighbors. At first, Lambert refuses to give in to the "blackmail" and calls in the police to unmask the indelicate woman, but love soon gets in the way...

Material shot between 1961 and 1967 ,including bad takes for Quasi una tangente, is reorganized following the five acts of Shakespeare's The Tempest. Thus Ariel loquitur ("Ariel speaks") has five numbered sections, and a Prospero-like figure of old philosopher appears repeatedly. The wedding ceremony of Miranda and Ferdinand in Act IV of the play is performed in section IV, an unedited night-film in which one catches glimpses of a match being lit. The last section introduces color and sound, the latter through the Beatles' A Day in the Life (from Sgt.Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band).

"Trasferimento" takes up the erotic theme of 8mm films and manipulates it using development techniques studied in early 16mm cinema. The regression that emerged only later in the re-reading of Macrozoom is here contemporary with the filming itself, which is in fact a re-interpretation of other cinematic material . The film’s process consists precisely in transferring, through technique, certain expired yet traumatic data into existence. The sexual act is explicit, and the material itself is a film. He seems concerned with reconnecting to the moment of his own conception, and here he is very close to it. (M. Bacigalupo)

An “ironic visual reportage” of four artist projects at the L’Attico gallery in Rome, 1968. Patella infuses the work of the artists from the arte povera movement with touches of surrealism, as tinted monochromatic footage of these exhibitions/actions lends them a silent film aesthetic. The title refers to the last names of the main players: gallery owner Fabio Sargentini and artists Jannis Kounellis, Eliseo Mattiacci, Pino Pascali and Luca Maria Patella himself. Kounellis is shown using the gallery as a studio, dying bits of cloth among live animals; Mattiacci engages passerby in a happening on the city streets; Patella and Rosa Foschi are shown in a similar scenario to Terra Animata, with a flag performance in a landscape; and Pascali executes a bizarre ritual on the beach, covered to his neck in sand and later planting whole loaves of bread.
