The Engineer’s Voice

A man’s voice from offscreen. He lists individual words, has problems of articulation. At first these are abstract terms, the screen stays black. Sky, street, village and house, however, are accompanied by suitable images. They take us into the speaker’s life. It is his house. These are his automatic shutters. We look into the kitchen where his wife is preparing something. He exercises in a specially equipped room. Later he sits in front of the microphone again, obviously recording his voice to preserve it. Another dimension opens between the recorded words and sentences and beyond the images. There is an inevitability in the room – and a great love. The robot vacuum makes its rounds. Who will put the words stored on the computer into a meaningful context later?

Go Therefore and Learn

A critical look at German missionary work in Namibia, which played a major role in the colonization of the country in the 19th century. Two young filmmakers from Namibia and Germany embark on a personal and historical search for traces of the missionaries in present-day Namibia. Both were raised as Christians but now have many critical questions and reservations, particularly regarding the spread of Christianity. Their countries are connected by a dark past—German missionaries are now considered pioneers of the colony of German South West Africa, present-day Namibia. On their journey, there are many encounters, archival discoveries, and, in the end, even more questions.

Saltatio Mortis: 25th Anniversary Show - W:O:A 2025

Saltatio Mortis are the masters of medieval rock, who stormed from the streets onto the big stages. From a group of minstrels grew a band that weaves bagpipes, shawms, and heavy guitars into wild anthems, combining the spirit of times long past with the power of rock. In their lyrics, they sing of freedom, hope, and the fight for a better world. They sweep their audience away with their unbridled joy of playing. For their 25th anniversary, they are bringing their entire story, passion, and lightness to the stage at Wacken.

Wander Alone

On March 19, 2018, Sudan, the world’s last male Northern White Rhino, passed away, leaving only two females, Najin and Fatu, as the only surviving individuals. Once abundant across Central Africa, this keystone species has been decimated by poaching. Wander Alone tells the story of the last survivors as they live out their final days under constant armed protection at Kenya’s Ol Pejeta Conservancy. The rhinos' daily routines are sensitively documented in a series of vignettes that capture the intimate last moments of a dying species. The film blends insights from biology, psychology, anthropology and philosophy into a meditation on extinction, loneliness and the fragility of life on Earth. Through the rhinos’ decline we bear witness to the consequences of human exceptionalism and hubris and to the alarming material outcomes of our relentless industrial expansion.
