Dreaming Days

The Berger couple want to enjoy their vacation in the mountains, a break that they both deserve. Because Maya suffers from strong emotional swings and feels constrained by the concerns of her husband, who is successful in the hospitality industry. Things don't improve during the holidays, and tensions between the two even escalate when Maya gets involved with a mountain guide. But even this brief affair ends in tragedy: the lover is struck by lightning on a tour and falls to his death.

She suffers from the cramped conditions in her parents' house, where they save money because her choleric father, a miner, dreams of owning his own house in the country. She despises life in the Ruhr area where the air is always sooty black and she is dissatisfied in her relationship with the miner Wolfgang. A sudden change occurs when her boss organizes a fashion show in the department store. He personally selects a group of female employees and sales assistants to appear as mannequins. Inge is praised for her figure and appearance and is even allowed to present the wedding dress at the end of the fashion show. Andreas, a young German student comes to Hungary on an exchange programme. In the Hungarian village he falls in love with the stationmaster's daughter Piroschka and spends much of his time with her. They have an enchanting summer until Andreas gets an invitation to join another young woman at a nearby resort. Piroschka is jealous and follows him there, causing trouble. It takes a long time for Andreas and Piroschka to even talk to each other again. When Andreas has to leave Hungary at the end of his holiday, he is determined to return some day.
