Black Goddess

A Deusa Negra is a love story that spans two centuries. In 18th century Yorubaland, Prince Oluyole is taken prisoner in the course of internecine warfare fanned by overseas slave traders. He is sold into slavery in Brazil. In present day Nigeria, at his father's deathbed, the young Babatunde promises to go to Brazil and search for traces of their once-enslaved ancestors. Beginning with a Candomblé ritual, his journey takes him ever deeper into this culture and, in a dream-like sequence, affords him a deeper understanding of his ancestors' suffering and powers of resistance. Balogun effortlessly links present with past, real with magical worlds and discourse with trance. The hypnotic atmosphere is also heightened by the music of the Nigerian drummer Remi Kabaka, which plays with repetitive patterns and distortions.

The Desire

Widowed one year ago, Eleonora, a 33-year-old woman from Sao Paulo's upper bourgeoisie, lives alone, unsuited to her husband's absence, an intellectual frustrated and torn between the need for transcendence and a strong sexual compulsion. The life of the couple, although not happy, was intense. However, the presence of her a long-time friend Ana Maria, just arrived from Paris, a middle-class university student, is staying at his house. The two go to the site of Eleonora and she remembers her life with Marcelo and his death by drowning.

O Trapalhão no Planalto dos Macacos

This movie is a spoof of "Planet of the Apes" (1968) and follows the storyline of the original step by step - in spite of being a crazy parody of the original film. A group of men lands in a balloon on an area (it's not a planet, it's more like a hill) where talking apes rule and humans are slaves. The apes try to transform the guys in monkeys; a simian princess falls in love with one of them; and so on. This film is one of the several movies made for the popular Brazilian group "Os Trapalhões" - Didi (Renato Aragão), Dedé, Mussum and Zacarias (who at this point hadn't joined the troupe yet) -, many of them inspired by American blockbusters. It's a very fun entertainment, but the humor is very "local" to be understood in other countries. Oh, yeah, the ape "makeup" is terrible, but that's part of the fun. The movie doesn't take itself seriously.

Snuff, Victims of Pleasure

After producing a successful underground snuff movie, were the lead actress is raped and killed, the Brazilian Miguel returns to São Paulo pretending to be the American director Michael Tracey and convinces his partner Bob Channing to cast and hire a crew to produce another movie. With attractive salaries, they hire the broken cinema technician Edson Lima and his assistant Juarez. Together, they cast the stripper and hooker Lia de Souza; the decadent and former famous actress Taty Ibanez; the aspirant actress Glória Verdi; the candidate of Miss Contest, the Miss São Paulo Maria Rosa; and an actor interned in a mental institution, Sérgio Bandeira. The group believes that they are going to secretly shoot porn, and moves to the small town of Limeira. When Bob falls in love for Lia, he tries to convince Michael to forget the snuff and avoid her death. But Michael is reluctant and does not want to give up his project. Zezé is an eight-year-old boy who lives with his grandmother and suffers the drama of not having known his father. Amanda, Zezé's mother, is a beautiful but disillusioned young woman. She tells her son that his father is constantly traveling, trying to hide her own pain. Father's Day arrives and, at school, the teacher is preparing a party. Zezé, humiliated in front of his classmates, promises that he will bring his father on the day of the celebration. Zezé begs his grandmother to show him at least one photograph of his father. The old woman mistakenly gives him a photo of the singer Tony Marques, her daughter's former boyfriend. Zezé sets off to find her supposed father and ends up getting disastrously involved in the singer's life.
