A Modern Coed

Eric Rohmer directs this short documentary that narrates the presence of women in French universities as of the time of its release -- 1966. During the film's short run, the narrator continues to point out that during the advent of World War II, only 21,000 women attended college and made only a 30 % of the student body, a number that by the 1964-1965 school year had passed the 120,000 mark. Instead of opting to live according to what was expected of them, now they were joining the work force, trading in aprons for lab jackets and becoming professionals even after getting married.

During the weekend, they play in a real western with guns purchased at the supermarket, loaded with blanks. They love violence, their favorite actors are Edward G. Robinson and Glenn Ford. The heroine is selling at the Galerie du Niger. When the Nigerian filmmaker Mustapha Alassane turned the return of an adventurer, the first African western, Serge-Henri Moati wanted to make a film about film. The cowboys are turning black traces and proves at the same time the reality and fiction, film and life, sometimes extremely close, especially when it comes to the Wild West ..

Sergeant X of the Foreign Legion

A remake and rewriting by director Bernard Borderie and scripters of a well-made 1932 film, this routine French drama seems a little outdated. The story has changed from a Russian officer who returns home from the war to find his wife has remarried, to a former paratrooper who tries to drive a stolen truck back from Morocco and suffers an accident -- and the same fate as the Russian. As a result of his injuries and the subsequent delay, the ex-military man is unable to get home as scheduled, and the woman he loves decides that he has left her. Once she "realizes" that supposed truth, she decides to marry her boss. As in the earlier film, one of the protagonists ends up in the French Foreign Legion and all three head toward a fateful meeting in a North African desert.

With my wife, Olga Poliakoff, we made "I'm Eight Years Old" based on an idea by René Vautier. Using drawings by Algerian children who were refugees in Tunisia, the film immerses the viewer in the traumatized world of these children, horrifically linking the word "France" with words like "kill," "burn," and "torture." The live-action footage was shot in Tunisia by René Vautier and myself. A second set of drawings was compiled, and the children's testimonies were recorded by Olga at the Algerian-Tunisian border. The entire film was edited in collaboration with Jacqueline Meppiel. The first screening took place in Paris on February 10, 1962, without any precautions or authorization, for about fifty people. Sponsored by the Maurice Audin Committee, the film then circulated clandestinely throughout France in dozens of copies and was seen by tens of thousands of people while the OAS was carrying out bombings in Paris and Algiers – Yann Le Masson

An off-beat, uneven tale about a man intent on suicide and the three people who try to talk him out of it, Pantalaskas stars American Carl Studer in the title role of the morose, would-be suicide. Set in Paris and taking place over an entire night, the story has a complication in that the trio who want to prevent the suicide do not speak the man's language -- he is Lithuanian and speaks no French. So the protagonists comb the underbelly of a nighttime Paris, looking high and low but mostly low for anyone who speaks Lithuanian. Depending mainly on dialogue for its impact, the verbose drama reveals how the protagonists undergo a transformation as the night wears on.

A voice says: in the house next door, there was a lonely old man. When he died, diaries were found in which, probably throughout his life, he had recorded the various events of his daily life. A hand opens the one for 1968. A fine, manic handwriting lists: things seen on TV - talking about technical progress and happy tomorrows - a long walk with "Mère" through the streets of Montreuil, little anecdotes from the cartography workshop at the Institut Géographique National (where Monsieur M works), the fridge breaking down... Surprises too, like the first time he gives a coin to a beggar, or when "Père" brings the forgotten snack to work. And at regular intervals: "I wash myself thoroughly"... A well-adjusted life, in short, until early May, when echoes of the world in turmoil make their way into the notebook: riots, general strike...

In the 1960s, Jacquie, a rebellious young woman, turns her back on her family to accompany an itinerant guitar player, Pierre, across France. The love affair is short-lived and when Pierre walks out of her life, Jacquie ends up in the bed of the first man she meets, a student. Disillusioned and broke, Jacquie returns to her home, but refuses to follow the example of her sister, who has become trapped in a life of domesticity. Whilst looking for a job worthy of her talents, she pursues a series of amorous adventures with men from all walks of life. Will any of them live up to her expectations...?
