Do Over

Do Over follows five characters over twenty four hours on the last day of the year. As the interrelated stories proceed, the connections between the lives of the five characters begin to reveal themselves and their stories unravel. By depicting five different characters at emotional crossroads, Do Over examines the struggle of overcoming our greatest fears; the unknown of what lies ahead in the future, the fading value of our existence in the present, and most of all, irreversible mistakes made in the past that may catch up to us.

A Ghost in the Market

The relationship between the gambler A-hai and his wife Jia-yun is tumultuous. Jia-yun runs a stall in the market and often meets Mei and other housewives at a nearby shrine, where they make desserts and discuss Taoism’s promise of eternal life for women. However, Jia-yun cannot stay away for too long, fearing A-hai’s anger. One day, A-hai accidentally beats Jia-yun to death. To A-hai’s surprise, Jia-yun comes back to life soon after and resumes her daily routine. However, her body begins to decay rapidly, causing A-hai to spiral into a state of panic.

A Sorrowful Wedding

Chia-wen and Hsiao-fen are childhood friends. Chia-wen is the son of a rich landlord and Hsiao-fen is the daughter of a poor couple who works on the rich lanlord's land. Even as children Chia-wen and Hsiao-fen love each other deeply. Chia-wen is sent to school in the city. After graduation Chia-wen returns to the countryside and plans to make his childhood friend Hsiao-fen his wife. Chia-wen's father disapproves of the marriage between Chia-wen and Hsiao-fen and disowns Chia-wen. With the disapproval of their marriage, Chia-wen takes Hsiao-fen and they run away together. Unmarried, Chia-wen and Hsiao-fen live together and struggle to make a living.

Mr and Mrs Chang live in Taipei's Hsi-Men-Ding (the city's entertainment/red light/nightlife district) with their teenaged kids. The parents work as cleaners in a "love hotel" and send the kids out to work as ticket scalpers, block-buying seats for hit movies like A City of Sadness and reselling them at a profit. Tragedy strikes when the daughter Mei-Hsueh flirts with the idea of prostituting herself and changes her mind at the last moment, leaving her first client with injuries that put him on the critical list. The focus throughout is on the son Ah Tong, who has a latent talent as a writer that is never going to flower.
