Der Wettkampf meines Lebens - Die Geschichte von Axel Mitbauer

On the night of August 17, 1969, the former GDR professional swimmer Axel Mitbauer swam from Boltenhagen (former GDR) to the Bay of Lübeck (former FRG). He covered a distance of around 25 km through the Baltic Sea. Before his spectacular escape from the GDR regime, he was imprisoned and interrogated by the Stasi (former secret police of the GDR) for several weeks as a result of various circumstances. As a grim consequence of his arrest, Axel Mitbauer was banned from sport and swimming in the GDR for life - the death blow to his sporting career in his former homeland and at the same time the impetus for one of the most unique escape attempts in the history of divided Germany. This film tells his story.

Passer Domesticus

In the privileged suburbs of a Mexican city, Lucas, a boy on the cusp of puberty, tries to find his place—torn between friendship, desire, and violence. The film paints a portrait of youth, especially in those moments when tenderness and complicity collide with toxic behavior, misogyny, and dark humor. This coming-of-age film is a reflection on the invisible patterns that shape human behavior and are often passed on unnoticed among Mexican youth, especially in the upper social classes. The film invites us not to judge, but to take a closer look at how these forces shape identity and relationships.

Sinkendes Land

Fascinatingly, moors are both water and land. They are home to rare plants, special animals, and enormous amounts of carbon. However, these unique ecosystems are now rarely found in Germany. For economic reasons, 95 percent of them have been drained, posing a massive threat to our climate. Drainage turns climate protectors into climate killers, emitting huge amounts of carbon dioxide every year. In this film, researchers, farmers, and politicians have their say. How can these areas be successfully renaturalized? It won't be easy.

Headshots – Anja Niedringhaus, Photographer

In 2014, German war photographer and Pulitzer Prize winner Anja Niedringhaus was killed in an attack in Afghanistan. Through interviews with colleagues and family members, and through Niedringhaus’ vibrant and powerful photographs, Sonya Winterberg’s documentary paints the portrait of a woman full of joie de vivre and curiosity – but also reveals the political backgrounds to her murder and the failure of the German and Afghan security services that made this tragedy possible in the first place.

Igitte Sisters

Since the 1980s, twin sisters Yvonne and Susy Klos have been enriching the Munich punk scene with their electro-Dadaist performances. Their work is directed against right-wing ideologies, social brutalization, and the normalization of authoritarian thinking, and is satirical, radical, and anarchic. The film accompanies the twins for three days around the federal elections in February 2025—a moment when political alliances between the CDU and AfD provoke public outrage and protests across the country. A portrait of two artists whose view of the world is rebellious yet permeable to contradictions.
