The Vision Machine

The Vision Machine was filmed at the factory of SIGMA Corporation, a renowned global brand of lenses for photography and cinema production. Like most such manufacturers, it is based in Japan. Using lenses manufactured by the factory, Young filmed their female employees as they performed their usual tasks on the production, assembly and testing process. No men are featured, and while the piece alludes to the genres of documentary or corporate video, it was filmed and edited to suggest a speculative fiction: a lensmaking factory run (and perhaps owned) by women.

business as usual : hostile environment

A working iteration of the project "business as usual : hostile environment". Originally co-commissioned with Glasgow Sculpture Studios as part of Event Scotland’s Year of Coasts and Waters, the project was conceived to explore Glasgow’s Forth and Clyde Canal as both a literal and poetic route through which to reflect on the role of waterways in the voluntary and involuntary movement of people. Reworking aspects of the new film at speed and in light of the Covid-19 outbreak, Whittle powerfully incorporates archival footage relating to the UK’s Windrush scandal as well as material highlighting the role of immigrants in the NHS as they tackle the virus, foregrounding how political and ecological climates intersect and shape one another.

Night Song

"Night Song" is a wall-based installation that includes a video collage incorporating stop motion animation and hand painted video stills. It explores ideas behind the theme of insomnia. Filmed after dark, the multiple layering of images and sound draws the viewer into the unsettling emotional world of the insomniac. The soundtrack is made from recordings of a beautiful dawn chorus that has been slowed down and reversed to create a wakeful nightmarish lullaby. The hand painted video stills create a further dimension, taking the painterly process in the film making off the screen, back on to paper and reworked using oil paint.

To Be a Marma

The Marma are a minority indigenous people living in the Hill Tracts of the Bangladesh/Myanmar border. Ruled over by an increasingly symbolic monarchy, as well as the Bangladeshi state, they are battling to protect their identity, culture and territory in the face of mass climate migration onto their ancestral lands. To Be a Marma portrays how different figures try to do this through religion, music and land ownership. It was made as part of producer/academic Farhana Hoque's long term collaboration with the community.

Ride To The Top- Germany's Highest Construction Site

Precision work at an altitude of 3,000 meters. A unique construction is being built on the Zugspitze - Germany's highest Mountain. With a total distance of 4.5 kilometers, the suspension railway being built there is not only the highest, but also the longest cable car in the world. But that's not all: it drives over a single support that sets another record at 127 meters. How does the alpine climate influence working conditions? Our documentation takes a look behind the scenes of the cable car construction site and accompanies the creation of the impressive structure.

A Field Of Islands

Inspired by atmospheric adventure games such as Myst, and a poem by Édouard Glissant of the same name, this is a short film which starts with the desire to undo pain and constriction by finding 'negative islands' from which the world might be unmade. Nisha Ramayya plays 'S', who circles between lime kiln tunnels, observation decks high above a future city, and the London clubbing scene, trying to find a re-beginning, or a good way through this field of islands and into a world beyond.

July Days

"July Days" is a mixed media installation / moving image work that revolves around a single, blurry image taken around 1917. Purportedly representing the Red Army carrying Malevich’s ‘Black Square’, the photo allows for varying narratives, interpretations and hopes. Mingling archival footage with digital renders, "July Days" brings together a chorus of voices that explore what such a photo can represent in an age of fake news and virality. In the process, "July Days" invites its viewers along a hopeful and intimate reading of (art) history that celebrates the potential of radical imagination.

THE GOLDFINCH (After Fabritius)

The European Goldfinch is a wild bird which from early times has been admired, captured and caged for its beauty. That was also true of Amsterdam and Delft in 1654 when Carel Fabritius, a pupil of Rembrant, known for his experimentation with perspective and light, made his now famous painting 'The Goldfinch'. Today in the UK the wild Goldfinch can still be seen in captivity in small backyard aviaries or as dead specimens represented in Natural History Museums.

Vacation Deluxe- The Construction Of A Holiday Park

In the German Allgäu, the gigantic Center Parcs Allgäu holiday park was built on an area of 184 hectares. Around 5,000 guests can spend their vacation there in a thousand holiday homes. But it was a long way to go before the plant at the foot of the Alps opened: 1,100 construction workers, plumbers and technicians toiled to get it completed on time. In the end, the roof of a giant slide was missing and the TÜV checked the park attractions. In our documentation we have accompanied the construction workers in the last few days during the completion of the holiday park

Steel Giants- Mega Cranes

Higher, stronger, more robust: crane builders outperform with superlatives. Loads are getting heavier and have to be lifted to hard-to-reach places. One of the largest crane companies in Germany is the Knaack Krane company in Hamburg. The company currently has around 60 different cranes in stock, the largest of which can lift up to 750 tons. It is a long way through planning and assembly until the machine is used for the first time - the report accompanies the creation of a mega crane.
