Comme si, comme ça

What should we do today with poems from the past ? Why do poetry today and how ? Sitting behind his desk, Michel Deguy, great living poet, speaks, smokes and thinks with the same generous enthusiasm. Marie-Claude Treilhou records the thinking words, articulates their development through a series of readings or sung recitations of the poems dissected by their author. Fathoming the depths of “ecopoeticology” of Deguy, Comme si, comme ça makes up the most sober and vivid of portraits. “Without ever bragging”, as suggested by the contemporary ethics the poet formulates in the film.

Taste of Hope

The workers of a self-managed tea factory decide to go against the grain and play by their own rules. The problem is, how can you plan, work and survive in a world driven by ruthless competition? One day at a time, for instance. In a world ruled by profit and dominated by the exploitation of the weaker ones, the film literally offers an alternative set of ways about how to think our future and the means and tools to work for it. It is not an easy job but, as Taste of Hope carefully and precisely shows, there is still a lot that can be done if we change our relationship to production and labor. Instead of making grand gestures or political statements, the filmmaker works with the camera and with a thoughtful editing in order to understand how to weave together new possibilities of communal existence.

Waiting for the girls

On the edge of Bordeaux, in an area that is being redeveloped, a fast food van appears every day on a parking lot in the middle of the building site. It serves regular customers of labourers and prostitutes who hang around killing time without seeming preoccupied by the transformation of their surroundings. Babette, Dédé and Jacky, shipwrecked characters who are simultaneously melodramatic and sincere, congregate here every day as the construction progresses. By following their three meandering destinies, the film observes the ephemeral community that they have become in this in-between place, moments of respite that they manage to snatch from their own realities.

Another Paradise

Fifty years ago, the entire Creole population of the Chagos Islands was expelled by the British authorities. This secret operation took place to facilitate the leasing of the main island, Diego Garcia, to the US government so that it could build one of its largest and most secretive military bases overseas. As the military lease is about to expire, Chagossian exiles are attempting to recover their home in the middle of the Indian Ocean from Great Britain. The charismatic woman leading their fight in the UK is Sabrina Jean. Through unrelenting activism, including the exile community's improbable participation in the World Football Cup for Stateless People, she strives to keep the flame of hope alive in her community with one single goal: to return home. But as the elders disappear and memory fades, time is running out.
