Chakalmex

The Chacal is a young man from a humble indigenous background, who, in a racist and classist society, has become an object of desire for the gay community in Mexico. A power structure has linked wealthy voyeurs with the sexually charged Chacal.   Renowned Mexican author Carlos Monsiváis has noted, “tens of thousands of young men who have discovered a dark lesson: «He who does not show himself, does not sell.» They live in Tepito, Nexa City and Iztapalapa, communities on the outskirts of Mexico City created by mass migration from rural states. ChakalMex is an intimate look at their lives.

Lethargy

I realize performances so as to give a place to anemic states of being, to represent them, trangress them and if possible to transmute them. Faced with a society that pushes productivity above all else, there is a body that speaks to us that can become sick, and that we normaly ignore. I choose precarious elements in accordance with an equally precarious everyday existence, resulting in multiple pressures which become exhaustive. Lethargy puts us in a small place, where we feel the multiplicity and weight in our bodies.

It snows in the image. The light samples recorded in the periphery of a memory account for a space that fulfills its orbital cycle. And the snow goes away, because by inertia the matter manifests itself. The earth offers its gaps to a central force that turns reality into an eternal dèjá vu. Does the Sun strike in the same place as it already did? The senses are disengaged so that the present is suspended in a conflict of perceptive tensions. Now, the memory refers to a place; or green.

A journey around the universe of Idiazabal cheese in the company of exceptional characters like Eli Arrillaga who, widowed at the age of 24 years, had to choose between following her husband’s trade of shepherding, or returning to her urban environment in Zarautz. Eli continued to work as a shepherd and is today one of the most important producers of this cheese. Exceptional characters like Juan Mari and Elena Arzak, Eneko Atxa, Joan Roca, Martín Berasategui, Pedro Subijana and Andoni Luis Aduriz, who have absolutely no doubts as to the importance of an artisan, high quality produce that fits perfectly into their demanding culinary procedure. On the Urbía, Aralar and Gorbea mountain ranges, in the highlands of Navarre, the shepherds lavish care on their herds, their prized latxa sheep, with a view to obtaining a product of fine quality, capable of winning the annual cheese competition in Ordizia.
