Páginas del diario de Mauricio

Havana, a day in September 2000. Olympic Games are being held in Sydney and Mauricio's sixtieth birthday is here: a man alone and devastated by the unexpected death of his wife. The story is told through a review of passages that gave form to the last twelve years of his life, combining flashbacks with recent events encompassing the key moments that marked the path to that day. Individual dimensions combine with the social context in the last decade in the 20th century in Cuba, a decade marked by deep political, economic and social changes that stirred the ethic and human bases of these generations, the first to enter in the new millennium.

Recording every sound that pierces the oceanic silence of the countryside open. And night comes. And the gazpacho. And the party. You see.

Animal

Made over a two-year period, Animal is a detailed journey through the Spanish geography in search of examples of a subject as concrete as it is horrifying: festivities where animals are hurt. From the classic bullfighting tradition, to all different kinds of celebration, the movie approaches the humiliations animals are subjected to. This long journey includes visits to different towns, from Madrid to the Ebro Delta. It’s all about watching this images outside the popular context, inside a horror film festival, and wonder about the disturbing and essential difference in relation with images of violence in other films: fiction vs reality.

Haroldo Conti, homo viator

Haroldo Conti tells the story of himself. Through his literary stories, his voice rescued from archives, the fictional recreation of his anecdotes, and his characters, the film tells us about a man and his work. It is Haroldo Conti himself, that man who travels, a "homo viator," as he defined himself in the Latin he taught in schools, who guides us in this film through all his worlds: that of ideas, that of creation, that of affections. In all of them, one constant: a profound love for humanity and for life. Haroldo Conti, Homo Viator, knew how to live with intensity and conviction. But, above all, with joy.

More Than Anything in the World

The relationship between beautiful Emilia (Elizabeth Cervantes) and her imaginative young daughter, Alicia, is tested in this understated Mexican drama. Disoriented after moving to a new apartment and left to herself when her mother starts bringing men home, Alicia takes refuge in dreams that soon become nightmares, especially after she begins to fear that her mom has become possessed by the vampirish man next door. With a keen eye for the rhythms and struggles of contemporary Mexican family life, this film illuminates the secret worlds of lonely children while never straying from its true subject: the uncommon love between a single mother and her child.
