Broken Spectre

Irish artist Richard Mosse’s world-premiere moving image work, Broken Spectre, is a powerful response to the devastating and ongoing impact of deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest. Filmed over three years in remote parts of the Amazon Rainforest, Broken Spectre is presented across an immersive 20-metre widescreen panorama, utilising different visually arresting strategies to depict the unfolding crisis; each shifting in scale and focus to convey these urgent environmental fault lines more powerfully.

Stuck in a chain of prejudices and labels that are always marginalizing the black and peripheral people, where a war is located. In the favela! From Alvo to papoco comes to denounce the attacks on our people. Wounds that have not healed, which remain since the invasion, when a narrative of extermination of black and favela people begins to be created, questions arise. Who's the chat going to? Who will be the target? I ask you: have you ever given voice to a slum dweller? No? Then you are a murderer!

Private Footage

Brazil, 2018. Driven by the impact of coming across a 16mm film whose uncanny images seemed familiar but came from far away, and were made long ago, I decided to investigate the origins of this footage. At first, it seemed just an innocent home movie, but after careful research, the film has proven to be a revealing document from South Africa’s apartheid past. Among sinister discoveries and unavoidable gaps, I now reveal the results of my endeavour, based on contemporary online search tools.
