Manuel

An eighteen-year-old boy is released from an institute for minors with no family support, and for the first time tastes the bittersweet flavor of freedom; an imprisoned mother longs to go back and start all over again. These are the characters taken from the real world and transferred into a film that is first of all a shadowing of human beings, of their hopes and little acts of cowardice. But it is also the story of a time of waiting, of a soul going around in circles, a coming of age in a desolate and oppressive, marginal context that becomes a character in its own right.

Tonino

Tonino is a short film dedicated to the memory of Antonio Esposito Ferraioli, a chef and CGIL trade unionist who was killed by the Camorra on August 30, 1978, in Pagani, in the province of Salerno. Two shots from a lupara shotgun fatally wounded him outside the home of his future wife. He was only 27 years old. His crime, as a trade unionist, was refusing to cook rotten meat for the canteen of Fatme, a large industrial plant in Pagani. He had also fought to improve the working conditions of his fellow workers in the factory. The Camorra did not forgive him. To date, there have been no convictions for either the instigators or the perpetrators of the murder of Esposito Ferraioli. The short film begins and ends at the scene of the murder. The story begins immediately after the execution. It is 1978.

W di Walter

"W for Walter," directed by Rossana Podestà and Paola Nessi, is the last gesture of love that Rossana, who passed away in December 2013, offered to Walter Bonatti, recounting with intense sweetness and simplicity the life of the great mountaineer and explorer. Walter Bonatti and Rossana Podestà met when both were at the end of their respective careers. She was a renowned international actress, he was a beloved explorer of distant lands, and, above all, the man who shaped the history of world mountaineering. Two extremely different lives that, as Rossana recounts in the film, slowly slid into each other, creating an unbreakable bond.

L'incoronazione di Poppea

Love conquers all – ruthlessly and irresistibly – as Emperor Nero and his mistress Poppea remove the obstacles to their union. At Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu David Alden’s visually sumptuous production, with its suggestions of a giant game of chess, puts the opera’s potent blend of sex and politics in a context that sets ancient against modern– just as the action juxtaposes scurrilous comedy and stark drama. Monteverdi’s magnificent score, meanwhile, accommodates intrigue, wit, nobility, tragedy and sensuality, and, led by the intense Sarah Connolly and the delectable Miah Persson, the cast brings both drama and music startlingly to life.

Almost Nothing

CERN, the world's largest physics laboratory, is also a society in itself. A mythological microcosm and science's answer to the Tower of Babel, with its many thousand employees as an indispensable element among cables and computers. The researchers speak the same esoteric and nerdy language. But their physical trials are not the only experiments in the human anthill. CERN is also a utopian experiment in collaboration across cultures, where the world's most advanced technology meets the world's sharpest—and some of the quirkiest—minds.

Il pane a vita

In October 2012, after 123 years, the cotton factory Honegger of Albino closed down, in the middle valley of Bergamo, where working is a religion. In the cotton factory, the place at the loom was handed down from mother to daughter, and newly employed workers were sure to have found "ol pà 'n véta", their bread and butter for a life time. Following for a whole winter the daily life of three workers on unemployment benefits, the film narrates the decline, now definitive, of a whole idea of work and society and the subsequent emptiness. Such a transition concerns the whole of Italy, where a fourth of the industrial power was lost in the last five years. However, Italy is not clearly dealing with such a transition yet. Now that bread is finished, how are we going to reinvent our life?
