The Story of British Cinema: The Pioneer Years

For this informative new one-off, film writer Ian Nathan focuses on the first 60 years of British film, from the invention of cinema and the transition from stage to screen, to the emergence of the studios and the first popular idols. Nathan takes us through the work of leading British film-makers — a talent pool that, like Hollywood’s, benefited from the influx of refugees fleeing Europe — including Alfred Hitchcock, Powell and Pressburger, and many more besides.

The Wild Tour

In May 2021, Daniel Bye and Boff Whalley set off from Northam Burrows, on Devon’s north coast. They aimed to run 120 miles to the south coast, finishing in Dartmouth. They stopped along the way in fields, farm yards, chapels, barns and orchards, to perform their show ‘These Hills Are Ours’. The Wild Tour of Devon was a celebration of everything we’d all been unable to do over the past year: perform live, sing together, and run in places too wild to be accessible from our front doors. It’s a comeback tour with a difference.

Off The Rails

Rikke Brewer and Aiden Knox struggle with the death of their best friend Nye Newman, and subsequent mental health issues, in very different ways, that threaten to tear them apart. In pursuit of 15million clicks of fame and money, and a career as a youtuber, outgoing Rikke seeks the dangerous thrill of UrbEx stunts as a way to numb his loss and pain. Aiden, more introverted, seeks solace in Parkour, while working menial jobs to pay for his increasing reliance on alcohol. As they process Nye's tragic death, deeper scars from difficult childhoods emerge. Exclusive rights to 10 years of their self-shot archive reveal a rich story of their formative years. As we watch the stunts with sweaty palms and open mouths, we ultimately engage with the warmth and humanity of these two extraordinary young men.

(para)site

(para)site is an ongoing, multi-stranded artistic project by zack mennell. The project reflects on class, disability, queerness & ecology through the lens of zack’s experience. The (para)site works emerge through zack’s psychogeographic explorations of sites of industrial, working-class history, where they scavenge for materials and undertake strange performative actions. "I am not the water or the land. I am the sediment - the shit poisoning the river, I am the parasite washed from the shorelines into the depths."

Permissible Beauty

A short film that uses the notion of ‘beauty’ as both a creative starting point and an analytical lens for interrogating the part that heritage has played in celebrating some lives whilst overlooking others. Placing Black queer experience at the heart of a highly collaborative process we will create richly layered portraits of contemporary figures (rendered in photography, oral testimony, performance and sound) out of a process of engagement with historic portraiture held in UK heritage collections. The portraits, brought together in a film aimed at both existing and new heritage audiences, especially people of colour/LGBTQ groups, explores shifting notions of beauty and asks why some expressions are more permissible than others.
