Lubiana Laibach

The Path of Remembrance and Comradeship is a long walkway encircling Ljubljana, Slovenia, charting the length of a military perimeter that surrounded the city during its occupation in World War Two. Seventy large stones dot the path at intervals along the way, marking the position of former bunkers erected by the Italian and German armies to quash a burgeoning partisan resistance. Wryly mimicking the leisurely pace of a stroll, Michael Pattison’s Lubiana Laibach inches along the path one boulder at a time. The film is made up of a dazzling montage of static shots, one dissolving seamlessly into the next. The marker of each shot to the other is the fixed outline of the stones themselves, which do not change position on screen. What warps and transforms before our eyes is the space around them, a powerful evocation and metaphorical reanimation of the invisible contours of a history of resistance.

Aquaventure- Dubai’s Gigantic Waterpark

Dubai – the Middle East’s land of the future. “Higher, faster, XXL” is the motto of the desert emirate in the Gulf popular with tourists. It was the largest of its kind in the Middle East even before now. But the makers of the Atlantis are stepping things up a gear! A new section of the park is being built on an area of almost six hectares in size, including a 34-meter-high slide tower. The opening date is fast approaching, but there are still frequent delays on the construction site. The documentary accompanies the construction work and the opening of the amusement park.

This ship can process and transport around 6,000 tons of fresh fish. The fish is sorted and frozen in the factory below deck. The trawler's fishing areas are in the English Channel, but also in the North Atlantic and the Pacific. The week-long journeys are a great physical challenge for the committed crew. Our documentary gives insights into the tough everyday life at a fishing expedition on a board the giant ship.

Frisky and Mannish: Popcorn

From its sweeping soundtracks and iconic themes to its ludicrous tropes, the silver screen is fertile ground for this acclaimed pair of pop academics. They’ve rigorously examined the inner workings of truly great films, such as Mrs Doubtfire, Strictly Ballroom, and Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride to name but a few. They’ve explored ideas that directors may not have considered (Scarface is, in fact, much snappier as a musical, FYI). So, this riotous double act are fully prepared to rip apart and redefine cinema as we know it. Part-movie, part-live show, part-parody, part-love letter to cinema - PopCorn is the digital realisation of everything audiences and critics have come to love about Frisky & Mannish.

RIP SENI

Overnight on 24th June 2020, graffiti reading ‘RIP SENI’ appeared on a public artwork outside Bethlem Royal Hospital, a psychiatric hospital in South London. The red spray-painted letters called attention to Seni Lewis, a 23-year-old black man who died at the hands of 11 police officers while in the care of the hospital in 2010. The artwork had been created by Turner-prize nominee Mark Titchner. It was made up of eight placards asking questions about mental capacity and assessment, creating a powerful resonance between the artwork and the new graffiti. This film reflects multiple perspectives, from mental health professionals to families who have lost loved ones in police custody, prisons and psychiatric hospitals. It explores Seni’s story, the crisis of mental health and racism in the UK, the long fight for justice and what happens when members of the public take art into their own hands.

Past Life

Through training GANs (generative adversarial networks) on thousands of photographic portraits of pulled, intentionally marked and distorted faces, algorithms were lured into creating the unexpected. The result; a series of uncanny faces, familiar, yet distant. A homogenisation of the face, some adhering to and some transcending social and cultural norms. Many of the generated faces are unnerving, complete with lacerations and scarring, a result of original disrupted images going through the digitised learning process within virtual space.
