Donetsk: The Battle for Ukraine

A story from the very center of events about the birth of a new country, the Donetsk People's Republic. Filming took place over six weeks from April to May 2014. The camera follows 300 revolutionaries who took over the building of the Regional State Administration in the center of Donetsk and declared the independence of the region. The revolutionaries see themselves as the saviors of their people from the bloodthirsty fascist government based in Kyiv. This is a story about how to make a revolution and what happens after that when you get the power. The heroes of the film are Andrei ("Lenin"), who leaves home and mother to change history; the speaker of the new government, Vladimir, and the head of the internal anti-corruption security service, whose task is to capture and interrogate traitors, fascists and enemies of the Revolution. When the heroes believed they had won, their fates abruptly changed course.

I Saw the Future

In a dark expanse that could be the cosmos, we hear the voice of Arthur C. Clarke, whose face - taken from a BBC archive dating back to the 1960s - appears in the distance. His features quickly dematerialize into a multitude of shimmering pixels, creating an enveloping and immersive space out of which the thoughts of the famed author of «2001: A Space Odyssey» emerge. At the heart of this spectral environment, and with a magnetic voice sending us back to the time of cathode ray tubes and the golden age of television broadcasting, A C. Clarke tells us about the arrival of digital revolution, decades ahead of his time. This film is an invitation to travel, and a crepuscular form of poetry to be experienced immersively.

Nivose

Snow is suspended. It becomes rare. The wonder is in peril. The extraordinary atmosphere which it induces and which suspends the stifled daily life, moves away from our impatience. Snow is a curtain behind which capitalist issues are going on, the consequences of which are universal and global. Nivose is an attempt to reverse the movement, to fix and revive by abstraction a climatic phenomenon so far condemned by mankind in a process that could be inescapable. Magic operates when the camera catches the flakes in the opposite direction.

Palimpsests

This film is from the project Unconformities, comprised of artworks made up from the material of surveyed land, extracted from coring construction sites in Paris, Athens and Beirut. These cores bare their "unconformities"—temporal ruptures, natural disasters, geological movements—in full view, revealing a constant cycle of construction and deconstruction that is the defining feature of civilisations past and present, with each using the stones of the last. History appears not as layers but as actions, a kind of palimpsest mixing epochs and civilizations. These poetic recompositions question the dominant forms of narrating and representing history, but also address debates around the Anthropocene.

What If the Sky Was Empty

In a psychiatric hospital, Thissa d'Avila Bensalah, a theater director, works on a theatrical construction inspired by Rainer Werner Fassbinder's BREMEN FREEDOM in which she involves nine patients under psychiatric care. The play's main role of Geesche is played by Annick. But what does it mean to make a fictional character come to life when that character is so close to one's own experiences ? A number of questions arise concerning the impact of Geesche's story on the intimate and collective life of the actors and actresses involved in the play. Annick, Georges, Jean-Pascal, Jean-Paul, Anne, Nordine, Felix, Stephane and Marie-Pierre question how their real lives overlap with their theatrical roles. These questions eventually develop into a common reflection on how psychiatry, patriarchal violence and social constructions are ultimately interwoven.
