Taxi Tales

A surprising journey through Middlesbrough, in and out of the cabs of three very different drivers - a young British-Pakistani entrepreneur who believes that immigrants have always been enterprising by nature, a local man who used to work in construction on towering glass buildings down south and an older seasoned driver who is in love with his job... until the day he falls out of it. Their stories uncover what lies beneath the surface of a post-industrial northern town and unfold into a state-of-the-nation tale.

Squaddies on the Frontline

Squaddies on the Frontline tells the story of the British Army's experience of the Northern Ireland conflict through the eyes of the ordinary men and women that soldiered here. For almost 40 years between 1969 and 2007, a total of over a quarter-of-a-million soldiers served on the streets of Northern Ireland in 'Operation Banner', the British Army's longest ever operation. These men and women were at the heart of the key events of the conflict, with over 700 soldiers killed and more than 6,000 injured, and a further 305 deaths attributed to them. Squaddies on the Frontline is their story, taking viewers into the heart of 'Operation Banner' and the day-to-day realities of life and work here as a soldier through some of the toughest years of the Troubles, looking at the impact that it had, and continues to have, on their lives and the lives of those around them, both in Northern Ireland and beyond.

Ambiguous Journeys

In the trap of a neoliberal economy lives are determined by conditions of increasing inequality and accumulating debt. There is very little protection for someone with little or nothing. Without proof of address, without papers, existence becomes subject to manipulation and debt. Debt is a means of control. The distortions of corporate wealth and cheap labour are made to appear inevitable. There is no ambiguity in the reasonable reasons for the journeys made by many – to escape conditions that are organised, imposed and untenable. War, poverty, unemployment move people.

Our Most Brilliant Friends

Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor are Slow Club. After four well-received albums and 10 years of touring, conflicting perspectives on success and Slow Club’s future have pushed the two apart. Could this be the end of the Sheffield-based indie band and the two musicians’ longstanding friendship? If so, what will the future look like when they leave something behind that has defined their lives for over a decade? And why can it sometimes be so difficult to simply enjoy doing what so many would-be musicians dream of? A remarkable, bittersweet portrait of what may have been the band’s final tour, filmmaker Piers Dennis joined Charles and Rebecca on the road, capturing the frailties and brilliance of their musical partnership and documenting what friendship looks like from the back of a bus.

Cornered Star

The post-industrial city of Marl, Germany carries the scars of the economic depression following the mining industry’s demise. City squares are filled with public sculptures bearing witness of past wealth surrounded by public buildings that are Brutalist masterpieces. Here, a horse stands alone. The horse is almost static, but in spite of his relative fixity, it remains the only source of life present in this deserted urban environment. The work looks at the archetypical forms of equestrian public sculptures and more broadly questions the use, codes and authority of public space artwork.

Abducted - Elizabeth I's Child Actors

The gripping true story of a boy abducted from the streets of Elizabethan London, and how his father fought to get him back. Presented by acclaimed children's author and academic Katherine Rundell, this intriguing tale is set behind the scenes in the golden age of Shakespeare and sheds a shocking light on the lives of children long before they were thought to have rights. Thirteen-year-old Thomas Clifton was walking to school on 13 December 1600, when he was violently kidnapped. And what's most extraordinary is that the men who took him claimed that they had legal authority to do so from Queen Elizabeth I herself. Children are so often missing from history, but this tale has survived by the skin of its teeth. This inventive film pieces together Thomas Clifton's story from contemporary accounts, court documents, plays and poetry, with the missing gaps beautifully illustrated by vivid hand-drawn animation.

Rockpool (For Jacques)

This video continues with my exploration of representation and the changes and transformations occurring in natural phenomena and the environment. Made by observing the intermittent changes in wind velocity working on and disturbing the water surface of a Rockpool. The perception of the rocks and pebbles on the bottom change in degrees from clarity to complete abstraction. The title of this work reflects on a conversation held with Jacques Perconte concerning visual transformation.

Dawn

New Mexico, July 1945. In this land, the paths of an old farmer and a young Navajo boy cross, just prior to a world-changing event. This visual narrative piece features beautiful imagery and composition by Vancouver’s Todd Duym, which won him the award for Best Cinematography in a Short Drama at the Leo Awards in early June. It’s a poetic, silent contemplation of the beautiful landscapes and a memorable day long ago, recalled by the boy, now an old man who knows the implications of what he witnessed that morning. This is a powerful indictment of American military nuclear testing and its effects on Native Americans.
