Gold Mining and Violence in the Amazon Rainforest

Since Jair Bolsonaro assumed the presidency of Brazil in 2019, vast tracts of the Amazon rainforest and the indigenous communities that live in and care for it have been subjected to increasing violence and a rapid increase in illegal gold mining, encouraged by his administration's rhetoric and policies. The research had three interrelated dimensions: the policies adopted by the Bolsonaro administration, the violent attacks against Yanomami villages, and the destruction of the environment. The evidence strongly suggested that the policies and rhetoric of the Bolsonaro administration before and during his presidential term correspond with the rapid increase in environmental destruction and violence against indigenous peoples throughout the Amazon.

Marillion: Distant Lights

This is a live Blu Ray disc from 2019 Marillion Weekend from Port Zelande and a Show from Leicester. We are delighted, and somewhat relieved, to present a record of the last Marillion Weekend, from what has become the distant past! Which is half the reason for calling the two-film set ‘Distant Lights’ - the other half, of course, being a nod to a lyric from the Happiness Is The Road album, which was the centrepiece of the 2019 Sunday night show. Just to quash any speculation, the delay in releasing these films was not so much caused by any turn of events, as by everyone having been consumed by the creation of An Hour Before It’s Dark over the last couple of years.

The Flour Test

A London journalist returns to Brazil to face one of the demons of his adolescence: the Flour Test. This ridiculous experiment was conducted during the military dictatorship to determine whether army recruits were homosexuals. It consisted of having the men sit naked on flour to measure the circumference of their anus and the integrity of their morals. Unfortunately, this procedure is not limited to the past. Bolsonaro's ultra-homophobic government has attempted to introduce legislation similar to the infamous test.

A Village With A View

In wartime Britain, a Lord permitted unused land on Cornwall’s Rame Peninsula to be built on. Tiny chalets appeared, each as individual as its owner, and the community of Freathy came to life. In 2016, with Cornwall’s tourism industry booming, the Lord’s estate announced that they own everything the residents have built over generations. The community were offered the chance to buy their own homes at an extortionate price – most were unable to pay. A ticking time bomb of eviction begins.

Home

For the people of Berneray in the Outer Hebrides, life changed dramatically in the latter part of the last century. Traditional ways of life eroded, and many families were forced to move away. Drawing on rare 8mm colour film of Berneray, directors Andy MacKinnon and Kirsty MacDonald offer a bridge between the contemporary citizens and their not-so-distant past. The result is a film of great emotion that speaks to the importance of place and the resilience of culture through language, song and memories.

Poppets

‘Poppets’ is a surreal soap opera set in Basildon and the Estuary, following an Essex girl investigating malpractice in a local housing development, and two women who meet and fall in love on a night out at Bas Vegas. They are psychically linked to the story of two Plotlands women (as overshared to them by an old man in the smoking area) who visit their local witch to make a ‘poppet’. A journey through 4 generations of capitalistic town planning, from the smallholdings of the 1800s to the luxury flats built on floodplains of the future.
